Hello all - so HubSpot has just released a very interesting new 2024 State of Marketing Report. It’s got a ton of interesting insights. But there’s one finding regarding content marketing and first-party data that really surprised me and I thought I'd discuss here. So, when these marketers were asked about their top five content marketing challenges, the results matched very closely to what we see in our CMI research. Four of the five are centered on the quality of content. They are: coming up with new ideas, creating content that gets engagement, creating content that builds traffic to the website, and creating content that converts into leads. Put simply: marketers are clearly challenged to figure out what kind of content they should be creating. This isn’t the surprising part. What surprised me was that, interestingly, less than half of those same marketers (47%) are actually working on a plan to address a cookie-free future. And only 25% are prioritizing First-Party Data collection. This has to change - and fast. From what we’ve observed with clients, it’s because when it comes to content marketing, most marketing teams are still wrapped around the axle of believing that all first-party data has to be personal contact information for sales such as name, title, email address, and phone number. Thus, they believe (rightly) there’s not a ton of insight to be gained to help improve the quality content (save for maybe MQL conversions). But, here's the thing - there’s so much more than contact data that can help marketers increase the quality of content. Measuring and capturing intent, trust, value delivered, and even data coming from interactive polls and surveys can give marketers so much value before we even think to ask them to show their ID to get through our gate. However, the inherent attribute in companies that are successful with this is in having a process, and an approach to connecting all that first-party data in some useful manner. Ultimately, every company we’ve seen be successful with content marketing are not just winging it. They have focused people, standard processes and a technology toolset that enables them to connect all of their audiences into one source of the truth.
