April's job market overview - as provided by Reed: ⬇ Job adverts in the UK down by 8%, compared to March 2024 ⬆ Applications up 24% year on year, compared to April 2023 What does this mean? If you're looking for a new opportunity, it means there'll be more competition vs this time last year, for a start. So... what can you do about it, if you're considering a change? 1️⃣ Tailor your CV to the role! I've banged on about it before, and I'll keep banging that drum again and again! If you're looking for a new opportunity, having a "one size fits all" CV simply doesn't cut the mustard any more. Every job is different, even if it's the same title but in a different firm. Go through the responsibilities section of the advert and make sure your experience ticks the majority, if not all of the boxes! 2️⃣ Spell check! This may seem like the most obvious piece of advice, but always run your CV through the spell check once more, and top points to you if you use Grammarly or something similar. Where possible, ask someone to proof-read, even if you're in different industries. 3️⃣ Speak to a respected, Industry-specific recruiter. Now, this may sound like a marketing ploy, but I promise you it's not. If you're considering a move, research recruitment firms who are champions in your industry and have great reviews and reputations. Whilst some recruiters may give the industry a bad rap, to have someone whose sole job is to tailor your next career step to your exacting needs is fantastic. And best of all, it's free to you! Any recruiter worth their salt will have a strong relationship with the client, and if you have their endorsement, they will make it their mission to get your CV seen. Happy global TA Day to all my connections working in talent acquisition! I am quite uniquely outspoken in my advocacy for internal TA, considering a large proportion of my role is reliant on companies engaging external support. I have never understood the completely outdated dynamic of internal TA & external talent partners almost battling against each other. For me, the very best businesses and the very best individuals in both worlds, collaborate effectively and know each others worth. It was part of the reason for me joining FDI, a refreshing approach to working with TA, not against TA, as so many recruitment companies seem to do. I want to take a moment to thank all the amazing TA professionals in my network, you are absolutely pivotal to our industry and at a time where your role has probably never been harder, it’s great that there is a day dedicated to your recognition. There’s a common misconception that internal recruitment must be easy right now. Advert responses are through the roof and there is a misunderstanding that there is more talent on the market than ever before. In reality, while applications are high, TA are having to spend more time than ever sieving through CV’s/resumes and qualifying people that either aren’t relevant or aren’t the right fit for the business. All while budgets are tight, average tenure is down and expectations are high! So, to those on each side of the “fence” let’s have less “butting heads” and more “combining minds”. A different type of post from me & one that I hope will give all candidates (current as well as future) some helpful insight & support when interviewing for current as well as future roles, especially given how tough the Talent market is at the moment👇 The role of a Talent/Recruitment professional isn't just to get candidates jobs (Although I'm sure 99% of people will think this is the only thing Talent/Recruitment professionals do but that's a completely separate conversation🙄) We're here to provide tips & tricks & support on how best to position yourself when interviewing for a role so without further a do, take a look & if the below helps just 1 person secure their next role then I consider that a success🥳 INTERVIEW DO'S ✅ AND DON'TS ❌ DO: ✅ Arrive a few minutes early ⏲ (up to five, no need to get there any earlier or else they may wonder why you have nothing better to do 😂) ✅ Read over the job description and company website beforehand so you have an idea of what you're getting yourself into ✅ Practice giving a quick overview of your background and experience. Don't recite your resume word for word, but you should be able to talk about what you do day-to-day and what sets you apart! ✅ Come prepared with questions to ask about the company and role (if you can't come up with anything, they may wonder if you are really that interested) ✅ Write them a thank you note/email after the interview thanking them for their time 💌 DON'T: ❌ Ask about money 💸 They're trying to get to know you and see if you would be a good fit, and bringing up money can make it seem like that's all you care about! Let them be the ones to bring it up if they want to down the line. ❌ Emphasize the perks over the job. If they ask you why you're interested in working there and you just say the flexibility and PTO, they may wonder how interested you are in the actual work 😂 ❌ Speak poorly of your current company/coworkers. I've talked to plenty of candidates who want a new job because they're in a toxic work environment and I totally get that. However, the people interviewing you don't know you or your situation, so complaining about your boss can make them think you're negative and not a team player. Knowing how to interview is a gamechanger! The interview phase 100% determines if you get the job or not, so message me if you want help navigating the process!

An alarming reminder of the challenges we face in the recruitment market! CityA.M.'s latest report shows that over 400 UK recruitment companies went bust last year 🤯😩. Some of which were boutique SME's & Start-Ups, others were prestigious enterprises which you would've never predicted. With it being world mental health day and since recently discovering that more than 70% of professionals in media and advertising have faced burnout in the past year, I've been thinking... Could it be the end for the CV? As TA and HR leaders talent strategies move towards a future where hiring is based on skills and potential, rather than academic attainments and time spent in industry, could the end game for this make CVs redundant? Having had this thought, I went down bit of a rabbit hole today. Turns out, some people credit Leonardo Da Vinci with creating the first CV in 1481, in the form of a letter he sent outlining his experience to a potential employer. Kind of humanising to think of Da Vinci as a job seeking candidate, trying to find his next role. Sending a resume became standard practice in the 1950’s. A lot has changed since then, but how people present their experience, and how most employers compare applicants really hasn’t. I think we are a long way from an organisation having the confidence to hire a candidate without ever seeing their CV. Starting with this end in mind, and reverse engineering the selection process, though? Now there’s an interesting idea.

Following bleak recruitment performace in June, there has been a resurgence of job creation, adverts being posted, and placements being made in July. TL;DR🚀: - The total volume of placements increased by 34%. - Temporary & contract placements increased by 40%. - Permanent placements increased by 11%.  - Revenue per recruiter increased by 49% against a slow June. Further insights📖: - Jobs created increased 15% on the month. - Job adverts increased by 19%, reaching the highest level this year. - Both perm and temp & contract placements were at the highest level this year. 📣 PLEASE RESPOND TO JOB APPLICANTS!! Just a quick plea to companies looking for people for their roles on LinkedIn or elsewhere! I ran a quick poll a week or ago, asking: When you have applied directly for a role on LinkedIn recently, not via a recruitment agency, did you receive a response from the company? This was the response from over 200 people ... ✔ Yes - 26% ⚠ No - 68% ❓ Something else - 6% I know that many people in Talent or Recruitment Manager roles have very full in-boxes, and it seems impossible to respond to every CV you receive. But … It’s a super tough job market right now, and many people are struggling to land a role. They know they are not ideal for every role, but they do need a response. At the very least, a simple automated CV acknowledgement would be fine; a more detailed response would be a bonus. Candidates see their CVs disappear into a black hole a little too often. It’s frustrating and not great for a company's corporate brand or reputation. Recruitment consultants are also far from innocent here.  We know it's tricky to respond to every CV, and sometimes end up having an on-line debate.
