I am privileged to attend a 2-day workshop with Susie March, an expert in Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) What I took away from this valuable workshop are 1. An uninformed child is a vulnerable child. Therefore, child protection and child care are our school's priorities. To put into action the scope and sequence of the CSE program have been built by passionate educators across the school. 2. Providing a solid PD about CSE for the team that builds the curriculum is crucial so that we have shared understandings and languages. 3. It is worth exploring the values and views of CSE from the team to see the diversity as well as to be mindful of strengths and vulnerabilities. 4. Setting the essential agreement (ROCK) helps to create a safe, inclusive and respectful learning space where everyone can opt out and know where they can signpost. 5. Reach out to the expert or inform the topic covered for students in advance to avoid any unexpected harm or targeting 6. ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) reminds us that as an educator, we are expected to stretch our comfort zone to widen our knowledge to serve our students better. 7. Taking away a lot of anxiety/frustration from teaching CSE, Susie advised that teachers should play the role of facilitators. 8. It takes a lot of time, expertise and patience to build a comprehensive Sex Ed curriculum, which reminds me of the Knoster Model for Managing Changes below. For institutions under the UK Department for Education, the initial version of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 has been unveiled for the upcoming academic year. Although similar to KCSIE 2023, The Key Leaders website provides a helpful summary of the updates. In addition, the DfE has issued a call for evidence in preparation for KCSIE 2025. One of the activities that forms part of my EAL reading training session is this activity, considering the difference in factual recall questions (questions that very often EAL learners and those with lower levels of literacy can be very good at!) and comprehension questions which require deeper understanding of the words and their actual meaning. This activity always highlights what it feels like to be able to sight read and recall information, but not have the depth of understanding to comprehend. People attending the training always excitedly answer the first three questions! I, as the teacher, could easily be fooled in to thinking they understand the text and what we have learnt. Then I unveil the next three questions and suddenly nobody wants to make eye contact with me in case I pick on them for an answer! 🤣 Given that research shows we need to have 95-98% understanding of the words we are reading, in order to comprehend the whole text, the closest many of us come to being on the edge of that is when we were at university and had to read a paper over the weekend - I used to find myself drifting off in to a daydream, gazing in to space, re-reading the same lines and generally wishing I was somewhere else. The papers we read at that level, as undergraduates, are very often on the edge of our level of understanding. It doesn't make the reading pleasurable when it's that bit too difficult to understand and that is how many EAL Learners feel lesson in and lesson out when scaffolded support is not enough. Providing visuals, key words, pre-teaching children and assessing prior knowledge and experience are all key to developing understanding and bridging experience gaps for EAL learners. In my reading training I go further with this activity and demonstrate how very simple scaffolds make all the difference, and in the space of a minute, everyone in the room can answer all six questions and that is what we want for our EAL children. Scaffold EAL learners to raise them up and bridge those word gaps, don't differentiate down and expect less of them (e.g. differentiation by outcome whereby EAL learners are told to only focus on question 1-3, whilst others do questions 1-4 and some children do all 6!) Wraparound Childcare in England will only receive a met or a not met grading from Ofsted. What that means is not only does the regulator not really offer commentary on the quality of the practice that they observe through inspection, but that owners, managers and practitioners are confused as to what good practice looks like. A key element of the guidance around the National Wraparound Childcare Programme is delivery of quality practice in provision set up or scaled up under the programme. But with no meaningful measures that are accessible and easily understood by wraparound providers, how can that be achieved, when it's so very difficult to be objective about quality provision; what does good even look like? This is very good news, as any meaningful progress will only follow meaningful review. Having read the 'purpose of the review' article, this is undoubtedly a brilliant area of focus to improve the education experience for all students. Will the students who are disadvantaged and those who are home-schooled be adequately represented in this survey?
