There’s a lie we tell ourselves in HE professional services: "If I just work harder, someone will notice." Here’s the truth: Hard work is expected. Visibility is optional. Yesterday I ran a free workshop: 3 Ways to Get Noticed in HE Professional Services (Without Waiting for a Unicorn to Land in Your Lap). We unpacked exactly this - how relying on hard work alone won’t get you the traction you need. Visibility takes intention. Whether it’s speaking up in meetings, building connections outside your department, or taking part in workshops like this one, waiting for someone else to shine the spotlight on you isn’t a strategy, it’s a gamble. So, I challenge you as I did the attendees: What’s one thing you’ll do this week to make yourself visible? If you missed Monday’s workshop, don’t worry, the details and booking links for January and February's are on my website.

Love this Rachel Reeds. My tips include: showing up intentionally on LinkedIn, joining a professional association like Association of Higher Education Professionals or Association for Tertiary Education Management and building your network with generosity and cross-promotion.

Ach. This hit me. But be careful, too much visibility and you get nobbled. End of the day, academic privilege is as poisonous as other forms of privilege.
