What’s driving the evolution of brand purpose? 🌏 🧒 ❤️ ✊ Last week we hosted a thought provoking roundtable with comms leaders across private, public, and non-profit sectors, who shared their experiences and views of a rapidly changing landscape. There's only so much you can cover in an hour, but some of the key takeaways: - We're moving from purpose vs profit > to purpose with profit - Purpose can be a north star, but it must be anchored to something more than the end goal, such as values - Australia once led on progressive issues, but not so much anymore - Society's rage presents an opportunity for brands to educate and unite - There is strength in numbers when tackling sensitive issues - Purpose is evolving from planet to people-first - Youth are demanding rapid change from inside and out - There's a cost of not investing in purpose The findings will feed into Havas Red's global Purpose white paper, coming out in October. A few days ago, I published the post below here on LinkedIn and on other social networks about my blog being in Vuelio's listing of the Top 10 UK PR blogs 2024. Some nice reactions here (thanks!) and there. On LinkedIn, though, within a few hours, I'd received email pitches and DMs from people wanting me to publish guest posts, with the promise that they'd promote the posts and "amplify my SEO presence," to quote one. All in exchange for "just a few carefully selected links," to quote another. It’s clear that LinkedIn is fast becoming a breeding ground for inauthentic, spammy, approaches. But the real question is: How do we maintain trust and authenticity in a space that’s increasingly being exploited?

Thanks LATTE. I believe passionately in this. Who knows what Scope 3 or carbon sinking are!? In fact there's even a debate around whether the term Net Zero itself should be scrapped. It's green jargon and by its nature, it excludes those not "in the know". Now, it's not about throwing out terms like Net Zero, but not getting caught up in speak that fundamentally creates a club. As PRs, we should be including as many people as possible in the conversation, educating them about what can be done and encouraging them to make planet positive choices at the shelf or the screen; not excluding them because they don't know their SDGs from their ESGs! #sustainability #PR

So the essential listening for #PR and media people is back - the “When It Hits The Fan” programme and podcast from the BBC. Presented by the modern-day Statler and Waldorf of the strategic communications game, David Yelland and Simon Lewis. Two weeks back (10/9/24) in a bit of a scoop Mr Yelland “revealed” that the Govt’s COBRA committee had commissioned online advertising to target and deter potential rioters during August after the Southport stabbings (Link in Comments). The ads delivered 70m impressions, he said. But how did the Govt actually choose and target potential rioters? First they targeted men, then age and then geography (ie location), Yelland explained. They behaved “just like any advertiser”. But wait, do not savvy advertisers (and certain media platforms) also deliver ads next to content consumed by their target audience? In this case, potential rioters. What would that media plan or online brief look like? What sites would get past the “black list” and what a story it would be if tax-payers’ money was spent advertising in the right “environment” for this unsavoury demographic.
