Tesco accounting for nearly half of total market sales growth is the key take-out from Worldpanel by Kantar's UK market data for 12 weeks ending 1st September released this morning. A slightly shorter review this period as I take a break in sunny Paxos! 12-wk sales grew by 3.0%, up from the last 12-wk period figure of 2.3%, with Grocery inflation at 1.7% in the last 4 weeks. #tesco has achieved their highest market share since January 2022. Their £469M growth in sales YoY accounts for 49% of total market sales growth whilst #sainsburys growth contributes 29%. #asda continue to struggle with sales down % YoY. The rate of fall in share is escalating. In March this year their share was down by 0.5% points YoY (14.3% to 13.8%). By June it was down by 0.9% points. Now it is down by 1.2% points. The question is when will this bottom out? Plans are in place to improve store standards and availability, but will these be sorted in time for the golden sales period of Christmas? #morrisons performance has been steadily improving since the Spring, but they still lag behind total market growth. They recently jumped on the ‘loyalty card exclusive price offers’ bandwagon, announcing over 2000 More Card price promotions, and added more items to their ‘Aldi & Lidl Price Match’ scheme. This will help, but I can’t stop thinking that a renewed push on their long-time USP, that of the unique Market Street in-store concept, will help them differentiate and potentially gain new customers who are bored with most of the main supermarkets all taking similar strategies. #aldi’s growth rate has been behind total market growth for the last 8 periods. Granted, they are annualising against 17% YoY growth this time last year, but concern will be high at head office level, especially as seasonal orders for Q4 this year may well be based on expected growth whereas the opposite is happening. #lidl’s growth of 9.1% remains impressive – in particular as they too are annualising against strong growth this time last year (16%). Their re-introduced ‘free bakery item’ offer (via the Lidl Plus App) was run throughout August – likely one reason for this further period of good performance. All eyes will be on the Christmas ranges being introduced over the next few weeks. Keep your eyes on Tesco Marketplace Those of us who have been around a while will remember Tesco Direct, the catalogue based non-food business that Tesco launched in 2006. That business was closed in 2018, killed off by competition from Amazon (and others) who could offer a broader range, cheaper prices, free delivery and without having huge amounts of capital tied up in stock sat across various stores and warehouses. This week though, more than 10,000 products have gone live on the new Tesco Marketplace. What makes this different? The listed products are sold by 3rd parties. For a while Tesco Direct was a good concept, rivalling Argos and effectively killing off Index. By pivoting the proposition to a 3rd party marketplace Tesco effectively capitalise on their huge online traffic while removing the fundamental weaknesses of their previous catalogue business, namely breadth of range and capital tied up in stock. Following the successes of marketplace offerings from Amazon, Walmart, Carrefour, Decathlon, B&Q, BestBuy, Kroger and Macy’s it really is no surprise that Tesco’s have launched their own. The fact that they are later to the game than others is irrelevant. Their website traffic is so significant that adoption will soon be comparable and then exceeding much longer established platforms. The range is limited for now, but I doubt their is anyone who doesn’t expect it to grow, and quickly. Launch categories include Garden&DIY, Home and Kitchenware, Toys, Furniture, Sport & Leisure and Baby & Toddler. I would expect that clothing, small electrical and gifting will be added shortly, and some broader food categories within the next year-eighteen months. What’s worth keeping an eye on though are the Spirits and Pet categories. These are product categories that are easily transferable into store. In the past products from new and niche suppliers would have been trialed in a limited number of physical stores, with distribution increased should sales warrant it. Now, I believe, new products from these categories will be trialled 3rd party via the Marketplace, with products that sell well then being selected to be distributed instore. With greater access to pricing, promotions, media, sponsored search and a level playing field in terms of search & content optimisation, I wonder how long it will be before some of the best selling 3rd party products find their way onto the physical shelf? With space on the physical shelf limited, another product will have to be delisted to make way. That makes me wonder how long it will be before some ‘established’ brands start to disappear from our physical shelves? Tesco Aiming For Extra £1bn In Sales From Premium Range The CEO of Tesco has revealed that the retailer is targeting an extra £1bn in sales for its Finest own-label range to meet growing demand for premium food & drink and challenge the likes of Waitrose and M&S. Finest currently has annual sales of £2bn. Speaking to the Financial Times, Ken Murphy said: “We haven’t yet set our stall out to say ‘what would it take to get to £3bn’, but we’re very conscious it is playing an increasingly important role.” He added: “We genuinely believe . . . that our intrinsic [food] qualities are every bit as good as anything you would get at Sainsbury’s and increasingly out of Waitrose … M&S, we probably still have a bit of work to do.” The report notes that in the face of higher living costs, shoppers are shunning restaurants and becoming more adventurous with their cooking at home. Data from Kantar shows that spending on premium own-label lines in the leading UK supermarkets rose 12% in the year to 9 June even as inflation eased. The figure was also nearly double the 6.9% growth in all brands owned by the grocers, including their budget ranges. The FT highlighted that Tesco’s Finest products account for only over 3% of the group’s £61.4bn sales, although this is equivalent to about a quarter of Waitrose’s total sales and M&S’s food sales, respectively. However, it has taken Tesco about a decade to reach the £2bn level from £1.4bn in sales in 2013. Murphy did not reveal whether there was a target date set for getting sales to £3bn, but Clive Black, a retail analyst at Shore Capital, told the FT that it would not be earlier than “the medium and long term before that number is reached” given that the industry’s annual growth is relatively modest. The Franchisee world - Interesting well done Domino's - "over 90 per cent of our franchisees started out making pizzas or as delivery drivers and have worked their way up.” For Andrew Rennie Domino's UK Chief Executive, the scheme is partly about providing his “Dominoids” with an entrepreneurial alternative to climbing the corporate ladder as an employee. “If you are a franchisee, you are running your own business. Within the walls of the franchise, you get to choose how you do that and where to invest your time,” he said. “Although not everyone wants to be in business — there is risk and you have to take on debt — over 90 per cent of our franchisees started out making pizzas or as delivery drivers and have worked their way up.” The sight of its branded scooters zipping around Kent must have made quite an impression on Lucy Harman. Not only has she been working for what is now Britain’s biggest pizza chain since shortly after she left school 16 years ago, she also has just sunk her life savings into the business and is busy preparing to open her own Domino’s franchise in Hayling Island, Hampshire, complete with her very own delivery bikes to look after. The chance to run her own small piece of the more than 1,300-strong Domino’s UK branch network came as the result of a company initiative called Homegrown Heroes, aimed at encouraging successful employees to take the plunge and become franchisees. Harman, the first woman to become a Homegrown Hero, said that despite her being “a walking Domino’s dictionary” and one of the firm’s top-performing store managers, without the push provided by the scheme she would not have had the confidence to go for it. “I don’t come from a business background. All my family work in regular jobs. Homegrown Heroes gave me the opportunity I needed. 🛒Tesco Leads as Surge Heading Into Christmas Tesco, operating over 2,800 stores across the UK, has reinforced its dominance as our leading grocer with a 28.1% market share—the highest since December 2017—with sales increasing by 5.2% in the 12 weeks to December 1 driven by Tesco’s competitive pricing, a robust loyalty program, and strong in-store performance. Sainsbury's, with over 1,400 stores, experienced a share increase to 15.9%, with sales up by 4.7%. Combined, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are now a whopping 44% of the market, clearly the dominant players. Lidl GB, the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar retailer with over 960 UK stores, saw sales rise by 6.6%, with a nearly 10% increase in footfall. Aldi UK, operating over 1,000 stores, maintained its 10.3% share, with the continued rise of discounters. Asda, with its 600+ stores, struggled, seeing its share decline to 12.3% from 13.4% last year, as sales fell by significant 5.6%. Morrisons, with around 500 stores, increased its share to 8.6% with a 2% rise in spending, while Waitrose & Partners, operating 329 stores, grew slightly ahead of the market with a 2.6% sales increase. Ocado Retail, online-only, achieved an 8.7% sales increase, capturing 1.8% of the grocery market. Meanwhile, Marks and Spencer Food, with over 1,000 stores, outpaced the market with a 10.4% increase in grocery sales, with 32% of households buying groceries from M&S. I’m a bit obsessed with market share per store and regardless of its dismal performance in the hands of the Issa Brothers, Asda leads in store-level performance, while Tesco relies on scale over per-store dominance. Lidl and Aldi show strong competition, with Aldi slightly outperforming in per-store market share. 🍽️Christmas Costs and Spending The cost of a traditional Christmas dinner for four has risen by 6.5% to £32.57, driven by a 16.3% surge in potato prices and a near 15% rise in carrot costs. Despite these increases, December grocery sales are projected to exceed £13 billion for the first time, reflecting robust festive spending. 🥊 Although a time of peace, the High Street Fighters will want to win the Christmas Punch-Up Tesco’s market-leading position and expansive store network underline its ability to adapt to evolving consumer preferences, while Asda’s decline highlights the challenges of staying competitive in a market increasingly dominated by discounters like Lidl and Aldi. Why is Carlsberg chasing UK soft-drinks maker Britvic? Whilst we understand the urge to diversify (both category wise & geography wise), this move is not straightforward for many financial analysts considering: - the potential synergies (GTM scale to improve Carlsberg Group distant challenger position in UK & overall accessing a total beverage platform in UK), - the growth profile of Britvic plc over the recent years, - the difficulty to scale this asset internationally - the price tag (esp. considering Carlsberg EV & current debt ratio) Carlsberg stock price lost 8% since the announcement This deal is a testimony of the increasing appetite of the world largest FMCG companies to invest into mid-size M&A deals ($0.5-5bn) with the objective to increase their growth footprint. Morrisons Snaps Up 38 C-Stores In The Channel Islands Morrisons has expanded its convenience estate with the acquisition of 38 stores in the Channel Islands from SandpiperCI. All of the stores are currently supplied by Morrisons and 19 already operate under its Daily fascia. The transaction includes six fuel forecourts. The stores are located on the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, generating sales of £124.5m over the last year. Morrisons has had a relationship with SandpiperCI since 2018, when the two companies signed a long-term franchise and wholesale supply agreement. Under the terms of the transaction, around 520 SandpiperCI store and operations staff will transfer to Morrisons. The business will be managed by Joseph Sutton, Morrisons Convenience, Online and Wholesale Director and his team, which includes Miles Foster, the Convenience Operations Director. “We have had a solid and successful supply and franchise partnership with SandpiperCI and we have a strong relationship with the business. I look forward to welcoming 520 more colleagues into the Morrisons family, together with 38 popular and well-located convenience stores,” said Rami Baitiéh, Chief Executive of Morrisons. “Our convenience business is now well set and growing rapidly. The addition of a further 38 stores will bring us another opportunity for growth and a strong position in the important Channel Islands’ convenience market.” Morrisons now has around 1,600 convenience stores, of which 600 are operated under franchise agreements. A couple of thoughts to ponder: i) with limited numbers boards need to consider the balance between narrow-but-critical expertise in an area (say AI, or e-comm) and experience of growing/transforming a business (e.g. ex-C-Suite); ii) what's the right balance of leaning on a board member's specialist knowledge (e.g. on Net Zero) vs needing that directly at exec level. What channel could add nearly 5000 stores to a food & drink #manufacturer's customer base? The fastest growing bricks & mortar channel currently has to be "Variety stores" - those discount stores traditionally associated with selling vast ranges of #generalmerchandise at amazing prices - but who now are expanding their #food and #drink ranges rapidly. In the #privatelabel sector, UK retailers such as B&M Retail, Poundland & Dealz, and TJ Morris T/A Homebargains, have launched some great #ownbrand products over recent years, with many new products appearing in 2024. 🔅Many categories are covered, especially ambient, pet, and household. 🔅We are now seeing some PL in chill, such as #foodtogo and #readymeals in Home Bargains. 🔅Designs are appealing, packaging quality is good, and "exclusive brands" are used, much in the same way as at #aldi and #lidl. 🔅Prices are on occasions lower than Aldi, but are mainly pitched in between the discounters and the main supermarkets. 🔅Quality is OK - but definitely an opportunity to work with them on improvements. Last week I saw the first PL product in the fastest growing European retailer, Action - coffee pods under the Palazzo exclusive brand. Action's volumes are huge - an attractive proposition for any PL manufacturer. B&M have around 755 UK stores currently, targeting 1200. Poundland have 845. Home Bargains have nearly 600, targeting 800-1000, and Action have 2650 across many European countries. Why Do Some Brands Hate Pedigree Wholesale Limited? It seems to us that as soon as certain brands realise they can go direct to the end consumer, they start undermining Pedigree. Every day, we get emails and calls with people saying ''I know you order direct with Pedigree, but by ordering through us, if you spend X, you get Y'' Yes, by cutting the middle man, you can potentially make more, but from a Pet Shop's POV, there are many pros of sticking with Pedigree: - They have a massive network. - They are lovely to deal with, are very helpful and they do indeed support independents. This point really needs to be double clicked on. Independent pet shops simply want returning customers, and DESPISE being undermined by some companies that say they want to help when all they want is to cut you out. - By ordering multiple items from them, you don't have to put many different orders with many different suppliers. I wonder if businesses undermine relationships with other suppliers to make just a few more pounds when, in the end, we're all here for the long term. Most of my SME clients are facing financial challenges 1. Residual inflation is still impacting on their business and as they are already more premium products, they are struggling to put through further price increases 2. Cost of labour - the budget changes to national insurance and minimum wage have hit hard - one client is facing a £1m increase in labour costs from these two elements alone next year But the big corporates are mostly thriving. Check out this summary of top 150 grocery suppliers (not sure if it behind The Grocer paywall but take a look if you can). The key headline is that average net margin is 5.1% and well up on last year. There are some incredible profit growth figures upto 159% (well done Bakkavor). So how are they achieving this success when the smaller companies are floundering? The difference is two fold - they have managed to invest in automation reducing the reliance on humans and they are able to negotiate better selling prices more easily due to their size and strength of the brands (and also corresponding lower ingredient costs) It is only going to get tougher out there for the small companies who are going to need to negotiate harder, differentiate better and find the pockets of value https://lnkd.in/eTkqqjcm

The most interesting thing about #kantar today is that Aldi are within 2% of Asda's market share. Unthinkable even a year ago, but represents a real concern for any retail leaders around the discounters carrying on regardless. Whether sales for #aldi are +2% / -2% or otherwise on Kantar. There will no let up from the discounters on their approach....... #Asda at -5.6% will surprise no one and as stated on here; Christmas will be the nadir but one can only presume brighter times are here with Allan Leighton. The challenge is that it will take time to get the tanker moving. #Morrisons were just +2% which given the woes of #asda is nowhere near strong enough. The stories of the BWS cabinets being opened tells its own story on sales growth, alongside the non-food specials being removed and more space opened out to festive food lines.......... Paints quite a worrying picture. The growth is barely there so clearly #Asda shoppers are decamping elsewhere. #Tesco lead the market growth with +5.2% sales and share up to 28.1%, #Sainsbury's remain strong at +4.7% and share just shy of 16%. #Lidl's growth continues to impress with +6.6% growth and share of 7.7%, only +0.3% on the year, however. It's clear from the wider market view that customers are holding off on purchases, the calendar flow for Christmas (IE still some way off and two more weekends) is playing in to this. Clothing data from #Kantar yesterday showed full price sales abruptly in to reverse too...... Clearly the #budget announcement on NI has spooked employers and by definition, employees who are suddenly worried over job security. Confidence is a fragile thing and the interest rate rises were some time ago, indeed, the rates have fallen since. But a number of customers will be having their ultra low rates come to an end, which immediately puts even more pressure on discretionary spending. Alongside this; #inflation has slowed but we are still recovering from the days of +10% inflation. I would wager most customers haven't felt inflation fall at all, if anything, the opposite is true. Indeed the #Christmas lunch is +6.5% this year. But inflation is slowing?!?! #kantar calls out Wines/Champagne and Spirits having biggest buy on deal. Buy 6, Save 25% on Wines has been almost everywhere in the market for weeks. The new 10p off a litre of fuel! All eyes on the big weeks to come; but consumer (and employer) confidence is notably fragile at the minute and the government must take full responsibility for this......... PS buried in the wider release is the news that #MarksandSpencer have benefitted from one in three households, at 32%, buying food, drink and other groceries from M&S during the 12 weeks to 1 December. Big periods for events and M&S wider appeal is starting to play through with the all important Christmas period where M&S typically pick up extra sales too. Having spent many hours walking the aisle of the UK retailers supporting our clients on their growth strategies, one of the highlights from this updated really caught my eye 12.5% growth in Finest, well above the 5% for food. Just last night delving deeper into the growth of finest, the support inshore within the main fixtures, off location and promotional activity are all clearly supporting the growth of the Tesco premium brand. Valuable insights which signposts growth opportunities into retail export markets for contract manufacturing opportunities helping retailers expand their premium categories which looks to be increasingly focused on great tasting affordable food to differentiate. This is not new news, as quite a few of the #tesco Aldi Price Match items have not been of the same specification since the campaign launched in 2020, notably some from the Tesco "Discounter Brands" (Everyday at Tesco range). It has surprised me that #aldi have not highlighted this over the past 4 years, but maybe the Aldi Price Match campaign is actually promoting their business...
