Last year, NCL ICS was successful in a bid for £100,000 from NHS England and Department of Health and Social Care to develop our own Research Engagement Network (REN). This national programme aims to:  💡 increase #diversity of voice and participation in #healthresearch, with a focus on underserved communities. 💡 build the foundations to explore how we can shape academic research opportunities with local communities. Health research shapes the future of health including the medications, treatments and services we receive. But we are all different and our bodies and life experiences directly impact how we may respond to treatments and how we access health and care. This is why high quality research that is representative of our local diverse populations is so important. The North Central London REN programme delivers on the ambitions of our Population Health and Integrated Care Strategy which outlines our collective ambition to focus on health inequalities by listening to our communities, working closely with voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations and academic colleagues, and becoming both an evidence-based and evidence-generating system. A strong focus of our REN so far has been on how we work with local communities – ensuring the projects were led by our grassroots VCSE and community leaders from our black and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities. In Haringey we focused on prostate health with black men, whereas in Enfield we focused on holistic health. By taking this approach we’ve been able to engage meaningfully with our local communities, build a reciprocal relationship and improve trust. Addressing health inequalities through urgent and integrated care Health inequalities continue to affect outcomes and experiences for many communities across the UK. As we work to improve urgent and integrated care, it’s vital to ensure equitable access and outcomes for everyone, regardless of where they live or their circumstances. At UHUK, our focus is on encouraging shared learning and knowledge exchange to support members as they adopt innovative, inclusive practices to address these disparities. Collaboration, evidence-based solutions, and strong community engagement lie at the heart of this mission. At our recent #UHUK2024 conference, we were privileged to hear from Prof. Durka Dougall, Chief Executive of the Centre for Population Health, Chair of The Health Creation Alliance, and Deputy Chair of NHS Acute and Community Trust. Durka reminded us of the many ways people experience inequality—whether through geographical and socio-economic factors or specific challenges such as ethnicity, age, gender, homelessness, or digital exclusion. She emphasised that addressing these disparities requires a deliberate choice to notice and act. Her insights into how virtual care can drive equity were invaluable: • Conducting high-quality research to deeply understand patient populations. • Ensuring cultural appropriateness in care for each community. • Using data to continuously develop evidence-based services that reduce inequalities. • Supporting thriving community networks to combat isolation. • Continuously evaluating outcomes to measure progress. This approach aligns closely with UHUK's vision: creating a healthcare system that not only reacts to immediate needs but also predicts and prevents issues at scale—an ambition echoed in the Darzi diagnostic. It was particularly rewarding to hear Durka acknowledge the excellent work UHUK members are already doing to tackle inequalities. Her advice to think of ourselves as a ‘powerful force for change’ resonates deeply. I can’t read too much into Dr D. P. Singh’s FOI request to the Information Commissioner, available via What Do They Know, but their tone and approach makes me think they’re operating in good faith. Dr Singh wished to make an FOI request to the Eastern Deanery Cambridge, which they say is an NHS body. But it appears that the organisation has changed its name to ‘Workforce, Training and Education, East of England’. Dr Singh’s attempts to make a request have been unsuccessful and I don’t know why. For this reason, I’m not going to cast aspersions. However, any remotely competent attempt to make a request to ‘Workforce, Training and Education, East of England’ should have been fruitful, because whatever it was, the organisation is now part of NHS England. Given that Dr Singh is more than capable of making a coherent request to the ICO (essentially asking what gives), I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that their other requests were equally clear. ‘Workforce, Training and Education, East of England’ is as valid a place to send an FOI request to NHS England as their central office. If Dr Singh made a request to them, only two answers were conceivable and only one is legally correct. I can just about imagine someone in Cambridge asking Dr Singh to make their request to NHS England’s HQ. That would have been wrong but stuff happens. But the correct response would have been for ‘Workforce, Training and Education, East of England’ to accept the request, and whatever internal jiggery-pokery was required to deliver an answer, Dr Singh did not need to know a thing about it. Whether you’re a national body or a tiny quango with two offices, I can send my request wherever I like. I can choose the less convenient destination deliberately. Like many other social care organisations around the UK, we’re deeply concerned that the Government hasn’t made social care charities exempt from the increase to employers’ National Insurance payments announced in the recent budget. Our NHS is precious, and we’re pleased to hear the Government is investing additional funding of £25.7 billion, but social care desperately needs investment, too.    Social care charities, funded mostly by public money, provide vital support to hundreds of thousands of people across the UK, and our sector’s already been holding the weight of huge financial pressure for many years, thanks to shrinking public funding pots. The huge increase in costs the Government has announced will be unsustainable for many charities, and could have devastating consequences for our sector. NHS trusts have some way to go on #digitalmaturity, the new snapshot report examining the Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA) scores of NHS trusts across England from Digital Health reveals. Out of seven success measures, ‘Ensure smart foundations’ emerged as the top-performing measure across all trusts, but with an average score of 3.2 out of five.
