‘You can’t really measure the impact of PR’. I hear that said so often that sometimes even those of us working in the sector can be at risk of internalising that belief. Which is why it’s so uplifting when a client takes the time to write in on a Friday afternoon to say ‘the result of the press coverage [that Rostrum generated] is a 25% increase in website traffic and a 50% increase in form completions’. That’s a measurable return on investment from your PR programme.

This report was such an interesting project to work on 👇 From deep-diving into the national digital healthcare agenda to speaking to digital leaders in ICBs across the country, it provided a fascinating insight into the challenges facing the NHS when it comes to digitising its services. This year's Public Policy Projects 2024 Cancer Care conference comes at a critical time for the #NHS. Lord Ara Darzi's impending report will show that the health and care system has lost vital capability and it is vital that solutions to transform patient pathways are brought to the fore and that best practice is shared. The conference has a keen focus on innovation, both with respect to new digital technologies but also crucially on how advances in diagnostics and screening can alleviate service pressure and ultimately transform pathways for patients across the country. Few are better placed to address these issues than keynote speakers Prof. Sir Mike Richards and Prof. Anne Mackie - both of whom will be providing vital updates on UK cancer screening strategy. Prevention will clearly be vital to enabling longer term NHS objectives on cancer. Discussing how to enable a truly preventative approach to cancer care will be Professor Julian Barwell, Dr. Sandra Husbands, Professor Matthew Taylor and Professor Prof. Durka Dougall. Approximately 55,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every year in the United Kingdom. Working in cancer research and clinical trials took on a personal meaning when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. It was during my treatment journey I realised not everyone possesses the same level of knowledge about cancer. As an Asian female, I discovered the taboos that existed culturally that I had never been aware of. These taboos have led to later diagnoses and delays in therapeutic intervention. My way of giving back is to ensure women know what they need to look for, that cancer is not a death sentence, how to deal with the side effects, and how to garner support from their community rather than isolation. At AquaClinical we are very aware that despite the UK’s diverse population, clinical trials lack participant diversity. Unrepresentative data adversely affects the integrity and efficacy of trial results, leading to discriminatory treatments. Our new report highlights how these industries use shared strategies to delay or disrupt public health policies to protect their business models. The Impact of Cancer on Families and the Beacon of Hope from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Cancer is not just a journey for the patient; it’s a path that the entire family walks together. The diagnosis of cancer can bring a storm of emotions, financial strain, and a reshuffling of life’s priorities. Families often find themselves navigating a complex healthcare system, adjusting to new roles, and supporting each other through the uncertainty and fear that cancer can bring. Yet, amidst these challenges, there is hope. Research in oncology has made leaps and bounds, offering new treatments and increasing survival rates. Every clinical trial, every new drug approved, and every discovery in the lab brings a wave of hope to families affected by cancer. It’s the promise that one day, this disease will be a chapter of the past, not a current story. As we stand today, the landscape of cancer treatment is changing rapidly. The dedication of researchers and the support of the community continue to fuel this progress. For families, this progress means more birthdays celebrated, more anniversaries cherished, and more precious moments together. So, while the journey with cancer is undoubtedly tough, the beacon of research shines brightly, guiding families towards a future filled with hope. As you will know by now I lost my Nephew Dean to Cancer of the esophagus just over a year ago, my family and I are raising funds in his memory for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) an organisation that has been advancing cancer research for over 120 years. Today, thanks to the support from MP Sadik Al-Hassan, the team from HubRx, PillTime and Centred Solutions have been speaking to MPs in the House of Commons about just how important and urgent the proposed – but now delayed - changes to hub and spoke legislation are for the future of community pharmacy.    Community pharmacy is facing an uphill struggle. It’s been given the chance to flex its clinical muscle and make more profit through service delivery. But, due to the demand for dispensing increasingly larger volumes of prescriptions many pharmacies simply don’t have the capacity needed to do both.    For community pharmacy to help take some of the pressure away from overburdened GP practices – especially as we enter the winter period - and for them to add the value they are fully capable of to the NHS, something needs to change.   And we strongly believe that hub and spoke dispensing could provide community pharmacy with the extra capacity it needs.      💊 By using a hub to dispense 80% of repeat prescriptions, pharmacies in England could save more than 4 hours a day each and collectively help create an estimated 1.8m new patient appointments a year.    These are real benefits we’ve seen across our own Pharmacy+Health pharmacies by using HubRx.    🗓️ In just one year we’ve been able increase the delivery of NHS clinical services to patients by 400%.   ⏱️ We’ve released 15 hours a day of total staff time using HubRx to dispense 60% of repeat prescriptions.   💉 And we exceed the whole of last year’s flu and Covid vaccination volumes in the first three days of October.    Today we’ve asked MPs for their support to move ahead with hub and spoke legislation – specifically Model 1 where medicines are returned from the hub to the pharmacy ready to be dispensed to the patient - before it’s too late.    #CommunityPharmacy #SaveOurPharmacies #HubAndSpoke

For Allergy Awareness Week, we've written an Open Letter addressed to all party leaders calling on the current and next government to improve the provision of allergy care in the UK. We've invited leading allergy charities, clinicians, peer organisations, and families who have tragically lost loved ones to join us in signing. And you can add your signature, too. As we approach a General Election this year, we believe it is important for political parties to be aware that approximately 1 in 3 of the voting adult population is living with an allergic condition. The letter is calling for the government to:   📣 Commission allergy nurses and dietitians as services offered by GPs to ensure equal access to specialist care.   📣 Establish a national allergy database for efficient resource allocation of allergy healthcare services.  📣 Invest in research and innovation to develop effective treatments   📣 Work with all industries, especially food and travel, and education partners to guarantee allergy education in school and working environments. We believe these four actions can create a more equitable system with more timely, accurate and effective patient care. We have lost 20 years calling for change and we’re calling on the next government to not lose a minute more to inaction on allergy. Soon, 1 in 2 people will be living with an allergy. This debate was a farcical exercise in avoiding the issue. Last Tuesday, the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising organised a debate at the House of Commons: "The anti-woke agenda is fuelling creativity".  And what a wasted opportunity it was.  But then again, why was I surprised?  Adland's institutions (its associations, awards shows, trade papers, and big London-based network agencies) have, for 12 years, failed to critique the influence of the woke agenda (to use the language that framed the debate) on our industry. Instead, for years, they embraced Social Purpose as the go-to-market strategy and currently unquestioningly accept DEI as the organising principle for agency recruitment and internal affairs. In the "debate" itself, all four speakers - to varying degrees - were actually against the motion! As Nick Asbury has observed the "proposers and opposers were of one mind in defining ‘woke’ as standing for all good things (not racist, not sexist, not fascist) – a definition that pre-emptively casts any dissenting opinion as ‘anti-woke’ and therefore beyond the pale". There was no mention of the fact that woke has become synonymous with cancellation, de-platforming, trigger warnings and fear of misspeaking. Or that, in "unconscious bias", it asserts that all white people are inevitably racist whether they know it or not. Thus automatically calling into question any opinion they might be bold enough to proffer. Nope, no one referenced the above - or the fact such traits might just be inimical to the expression of alternate points of view, original thinking or creativity. On the contrary, the speakers inveighed against a diabolical "anti-woke movement". Nick Asbury and I tried our best to see our creative industry (advertising) in this context but eventually had to explain that, in our circumstances, the "anti-woke movement" essentially amounts to erm ... him and me. I also pointed out that in our world, woke (in the form of Social Purpose campaigns) has not been rejected by some fiendish cabal (aka Nick and me) but by a) our clients and b) the consuming general public. Aside from that, there was no mention (never mind critique) of woke censoriousness (and groupthink) and its baleful impact on creativity.  Which surely is what we should've been debating. But then again, it's a discussion that our industry panjandrums have been avoiding for years. And they probably went home on Thursday evening happy at another snow job well done.

Another day, another brilliant report published from Public Policy Projects. This report, supported by our partners at Philips and Chaired expertly by Dr Hatim Abdulhussein examines how the UK's ambition to become a centre for excellence for digital innovation in healthcare should be fully realised - with actionable recommendations for NHS England, Department of Health and Social Care, Integrated Care Boards, and for solution-providers in industry. A new UK Government (of whichever colour/s) must make the #nhs, its #workforce and ultimately the #patients the central priority - not for an election cycle but as part of a serious long-term health strategy. Implementing the recommendations in this report will go a long way to meeting this ambition.
