The sixth most common mistake I see in learning & development solution design seems to be happening much more regularly over the last 12 months and can become utterly debilitating for your design process: Mistake #6 – THE WRONG STAKEHOLDERS AT THE WRONG TIME It's critical to consult with your stakeholders as part of your design process. However, who, how many, to do what and when? What we've seen happening recently is large numbers of stakeholders are brought in to the design process itself (increasingly senior ones), with the expectation that they input into the design, review and feedback. Design by committee is NEVER an effective way to move forwards. And to make matters worse stakeholders are often brought in half way through, so without the original context and learning outcomes. The result is you end up with an incredibly slow and laborious process, taking valuable time away from all of the stakeholders involved, pushing the actual learning intervention further down the line, a very confused design that has too much content, as well as too many and often conflicting learning outcomes (see earlier in the series for more on this), a disjointed solution, and a set of stakeholders who often become disengaged and frustrated with the process (and therefore the end product too). And that's not even talking about the significant difficulties it creates for any external learning partners you might have and ultimately the negative impact on the learners themselves. So, when it comes to stakeholder involvement, please keep these in mind: ·      Don’t confuse stakeholder involvement in the design process with stakeholder engagement/buy-in for the solution roll-out (which I'll come back to later in the series) ·      For the design process create a set of stakeholders representing the learners themselves and the business needs - resist involving more than the bare minimum needed to give you the learner perspective and the enterprise level drivers ·      Involve those stakeholders for a maximum of three moments – at the start of the process, for one check-in during the middle (and this is only for complex designs) and then at the end of the process ·      Set clear expectations on their role – they are NOT there to design – they are there for discovery purposes at the beginning, to sense check the direction during the check-in and to highlight any red flags at the end ·      Whilst their opinions and ideas regarding the design will be highly valuable, they might not make it into the design and not all feedback will be actioned ·      Less is more – make sure those stakeholders are super clear on the ‘so what’ of the design, and don’t overload them with every detail of every moment #learninganddevelopment #learningdesign #instructionaldesign #executiveeducation #training #learningsolutions #coursedesign #coursecreation #experientiallearning #programdesign #corporatetraining PCA Youd Andrews

Heads up - I'll be teaching a public Lean Portfolio Management workshop in December! Your only chance to learn about SAFe LPM with an emphasis on Evidence-based Management (EBM) from a SAFe Fellow / Professional Scrum Trainer... It's gonna be me first, last, and only public workshop in 2024 (I'm busy working on portfolio agility in the trenches most of the time). While the core of this workshop is a training experience - SAFe LPM, I'm designing this for leaders who are seriously interested in portfolio agility, who will be interested in figuring out how to get started / take the next step in their context, and have access to each other and myself as a cohort, similar to the experience my inhouse clients are getting. This can be especially interesting to leaders with a somewhat smaller organization that still have to tackle scaling challenges, want to move towards product portfolios, but don't have a huge team and/or huge budget to support this journey. A great question was raised in todays event with Dr. Justin James Kennedy and the EAWC (Enterprise Agility World Community) about Driving Organizational Change by Applying Neuroplasticity-Based Tools The question was How can neuroplasticity help at the organizational change level ? Firstly I would like to say, today we are living in a world of constant disruption and what we know today is not necessarily relevant tomorrow. New pathways and growth are needed now more than ever. If we don't feel "safe" we won't retain what we learn, pathways are fleeting. Neuroplasticity is the ability for our neuro systems to reorganize themselves , this is so important and I believe this is the answer is in why for the last 17 years the State of Agile report has reported resistance to change. Existing systems and approaches are not working. Understanding what enables neuroplasticity is the real driver for sustainable change For me, the answer lies in the powerful combination of disruption decoded and neuroplasticity. By understanding the underlying dynamics of disruption and developing the ability to rewire our brains, we can create new pathways, new connections, and new ways of thinking that support growth, innovation, and continuous learning. Disruption decoded is not just about responding to change; it's about anticipating it, embracing it, and using it as a catalyst for growth and innovation. And neuroplasticity is the key to unlocking this mindset, enabling us to adapt, evolve, and grow in response to changing circumstances. Willem-Jan Ageling I am convinced that the profession of agile coach is set to evolve, but certainly not to disappear. Although more and more organizations are adopting agility, there is still much work to be done to help these organizations create a sustainable agile culture and maximize the value they can derive from their agile transformation. Ultimately, no matter what we call this role, it is clear that agile coaches have an important role to play in helping organizations navigate the ever-changing landscape of agile transformation.

Here are the slides of today's mini-workshop at @aceconf Fostering Psychological Safety in Agile Teams - ACE 2024 https://buff.ly/45qLw2z Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained. But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture? In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change. Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.
