A Walk Down Memory Lane: The Rise of Door-to-Door #Sales in the UK Once a staple of British life, door-to-door sales have a rich history in the UK, dating back to the early 20th century when sales people would knock on doors offering everything including showers and the kitchen sink. Some of my favourites: Encyclopedia Britannica – Door-to-door salesmen became legendary in the mid-1900s, peddling hefty encyclopedias, often with a side of charm and persistence. They sold knowledge right to your doorstep—no Google required! The Kirby Vacuum – Kirby vacuum cleaners were a household name, thanks to their army of door-to-door salespeople who demonstrated cleaning power directly on customers' carpets. Some even vacuumed entire rooms as part of the pitch! Avon Ladies – A true cultural phenomenon, Avon revolutionised beauty product sales by creating a network of women who went door-to-door offering personal consultations and cosmetics. “Ding Dong, Avon Calling!” became a slogan known by nearly every household in the UK. Fast forward to 2024, and this seemingly old-fashioned approach could be making a comeback! Why the resurgence? It's reported that 86% of consumers are more likely to trust face-to-face interactions than digital or phone sales, making door-to-door a prime opportunity for brands, service and network providers. With the growing demand for high-speed internet and increased competition among fibre providers, face-to-face selling is poised to become one of the most effective new acquisition strategies in 2025. This time next week Retail Technology Show 2024 will be over 😟 so to make sure I make the most of it I have made a list of what I would like to take away: 1. Whilst it feels chilly over the last few days in the UK it is reported that retailers can expect more favorable weather this December compared to last year. This will undoubtedly boost demand for seasonal products as everyone starts to enjoy the approach to their christmas festivities! Last year's December was abnormally warm outside of Scotland, with England and Wales equalling the 5th warmest on record. Unsettled conditions and heavy rainfall (8th wettest on record for the UK) further hindered footfall and sales (this continues in some parts of the UK this year too). This December whilst forecast to be warmer, @Planalytics expects a more favourable climate for retailers, with temperatures still helping to lift year-over-year performance for winter wardrobe products such as knitwear, outerwear, and boots as well as comfort items including hot cereal, soup, hot chocolate, blankets, heaters, and more.

Did you know: The Optical industry was the 2nd most underperforming sector in retail for the last year? It has been brutal... With sound planning, a boldness to take calculated risks, and a good resource management plan, we emerge relatively unscathed, albeit with a few new battle scars. We have much to be thankful for, especially my team for standing by our leadership team, and our customers for believing in our brand and our products. There is still much work to be done, and so many exciting plans that will finally come into fruition in the next 12 months. We are even on the verge of opening not one, but two (yes, two!) new stores in the coming 8 weeks. When an opportunity comes knocking, we know we have to grab it. Guess where? 😉 (actually the picture is already a giveaway for one of the stores haha)

This morning on BBC Radio 2, yes I was listening to Radio 2, a historical reference was made to the debut of the first POS scanning system in the UK 40 years ago, the scanning of a black and white linear barcode through a laser system. This technology revolutionized retail by revealing product prices to retailers and consumers while streamlining supply chain operations. Originally a 'wow' moment and one quite alien to the mass market, the GS1 barcode has now seamlessly integrated into our world over the past four decades, becoming a staple that is often overlooked. The evolution continues as the traditional barcode makes room for the GS1 QR code. Similar to its predecessor's journey, the first scan of a GS1 QR code at POS marks the beginning of its normalization. Looking ahead, it is likely that in 40 years, the GS1 QR code will be known as the norm, effortlessly woven into the fabric of our everyday transactions. Change is constant, and this one is already underway with brands and retailers reaping benefits already.
