Aerospace & Defence news Please see below for the latest news flow: Lockheed Martin / Raytheon: Win $1.3bn order for Javelin anti-tank missile systems. The contract, set to be fulfilled in collaboration with Raytheon, is for a new batch of the FGM-148 Javelin missile systems. The order was established in May 2023 and run through 2026, and targets to increase the javelin production to 3960 units/year. The contract covers new orders for the US military, replenishment of US stockpiles, and export agreements. (Defense Express) Comment: In terms of system pricing for the Javelin, a recent export contract with Kosovo (Jan 2024) priced a system including 10 missiles at $3.12m. Lockheed Martin: US government withholding $5m per F-35 jet. The US is withholding $5m per F-35 aircraft until Lockheed completes the long-delayed TR-3 technology upgrade, despite resuming deliveries of the F-35. (Reuters) Comment: Resolving the TR-3 delays is still months away, according to Lockheed. The F-35 accounts for c 27% of Lockheed revenues, and the company plans to deliver c 100 F-35s to the US this year and 150 in 2025. Safran: Has acquired Preligens — a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) for aerospace and defence. The deal which was announced this morning, has an EV of €220m. Preligens provides field-proven AI analytics solutions for high-resolution imagery, full motion video and acoustic signals. The company develops complex algorithms and software to analyse and automatically detect and identify objects of military interest notably using commercial and government satellite imagery. (company press release) Embraer: Brazilian aerospace company Embraer has hired Oliver Wyman to help it penetrate the US defence market, with focus on its C-390 cargo aircraft, a key competitor to Lockheed’s C-130 Hercules. (Reuters) UK Defence / Boeing: The UK has received three additional AH-64E Apaches, talking the total delivered so far to 41 aircraft (out of 50).  The order was scheduled to be completed in 2024, but it now looks like the last batches may be delivered in 2025. (army technology) Comment: The $2,3bn helicopter contract was finalised in 2000 and also includes a $348m long term training and support services (LTTSS) contract.  The new Apaches will replace the Apache AH Mark 1, which reaches its Out of Service Date in 2024.

Propulsion module for take-off and landing aircraft Greenjets and Ricardo plc have shown a fully operational, demonstration propulsion module for use in electric aircraft, writes Nick Flaherty. The InCEPTion module, the result of an 18-month project, is aimed at eVTOL aircraft weighing under 5 t. The system uses a bespoke wraparound, immersion-cooled, ultra-high-performance, 20 kW/h battery, using 32 connected modules in a toroid. In addition to the design and build of the fully integrated module, Ricardo has been responsible for the compete thermal management system, incorporating increased safety aspects from the initial design stage. The toroidal shape has been designed to form part of the structure of a propulsion system, with shared cooling and structural elements, making its delivery challenging and complex. The design is configured in a 360o orientation, with bonded composites and a foam structure to reduce weight. “The architecture of our largest engine, the IPM500, has benefited greatly from our collaboration with Ricardo. With Ricardo’s custom battery pack integrated into the nacelle of our engine, we make vital savings in efficiency and weight, along with close integration with the rest of the powertrain. It also improves safety by moving significant battery weight away from the fuselage,” said Anmol Manohar - CEng, MRAeS, CEO of Greenjets. “Our engineers have designed, developed and built a system that is fully scalable, which also enables different combinations of the same module to power multiple aircraft concepts, from electric vertical take-off and landing applications to general aviation aircraft and sub-regional aircraft. The system is versatile and can be 100% battery or fuel-cell hybrid-powered,” said Matt Beasley, director of global engineering and operations at Ricardo. “Our engineering expertise in the automotive industry is enabling us to deliver innovative, sustainable projects in the aerospace and maritime industries.” Greenjets is now working with Ricardo on ground and wind-tunnel tests for integration into an engine for use in commercial aircraft. I was asked the question the other day, “As a professional in Aerospace Manufacturing, what’s your take on the current U.K. aerospace Manufacturing sector. In particular the access to skills for manufacturing". Initially the question stumped me. Have I missed a development in the industry? Do we truly have an issue with skills? What skills are hard to access? The UK education system focusses a lot of time and effort on the education of young people/engineers in STEM topics. A real highlight for the education system, but does it provide enough education in the practical skills within the 'pure' manufacturing roles. Consider machining - the use of lathes/mills etc - where hands-on skills are more applicable to the development of new employees and more often than not passed on by older generations through peer-to-peer learning. Do we need to consider a focus shift to teach the skills that so often businesses use 'peer-to-peer' training to educate employees. Equally the sector must embrace the digital changes that are becoming more prominent in order to remain highly successful and, arguably more importantly, competitive on the global Aerospace stage. A lot of talk is about how digitalisation could impact jobs in the sector, but is that merely scare mongering to resist change? Both competitiveness and standing on the global stage within Aerospace should be enough to support the adoption of technology within Aerospace Manufacturing.

Reaction Engines, a British aerospace innovator, has collapsed into administration after failing to secure critical funding, ending its #Hypersonic flight ambitions. PwC was appointed as administrator and has made 173 of its 208 employees redundant, retaining a few to complete existing orders and assist in winding down operations. Reaction’s innovative cooling technology, used by Mercedes F1 and other Formula One teams, faces potential supply challenges for the 2025 season, with Mercedes in dialogue to secure required hardware. PwC is also assessing the intellectual property of Reaction's cutting-edge technology. Founded in 1989, the company’s Sabre engine aimed to combine jet efficiency with rocket power, crucial for hypersonic speeds. Financial support had dwindled, with key shareholders like BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce unwilling to further invest. The company's downfall also casts uncertainty over a UK-led hypersonic military project, previously backed by Reaction in collaboration with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. The future of a major British aerospace plant is in doubt with up to 2,400 jobs at risk following a carve-up of owner Spirit AeroSystems between Boeing and Airbus. A chunk of Spirit’s operations at the facility in Belfast have been left without an owner, putting the long-term future of the entire factory in danger. Boeing is to buy Kansas-based Spirit for $4.7bn (£3.7bn) in order to gain control of a key supplier to its troubled 737 Max jet, while offloading operations that provide components for Airbus to its European rival. This means Airbus will be taking control of a part of the Belfast factory that oversees wing and fuselage production for the Airbus A220 regional jet. Boeing said an alternative buyer is being sought for the other parts of Spirit’s Belfast business that neither manufacturer is prepared to take on.
