To summarise the points which were made during our #a2apayments #acocunt2account #payments panel at the #PLSUK this week: 1. The benefits of a2a payments are multiple - less #disputes, #fraud more liquidity due to faster settlement, lower costs and great customer experience 2. However, #merchant adoption really varies country to country and consumers are just not used to this payment method in the UK yet, although some merchants are acting as trailblazers! 3. Some checkouts lend themselves better to a2a payments than others, we talked about in-car payments as an example where changing a payment method is very difficult 4. And finally we talked about how the regulators and regulations such as #PSD3 can help by standardising and expanding the market. Countless press articles over the past few days covering Monzo Bank posting its first annual profit of £15.4m since launching in 2015 (including this latest one from the Financial Times below) The business is now valued at $5.2b. Lot's of questions (mostly dodged!) about the potential of a London listing or the prospect of a US listing with a growing US focus. Also confirmation that it’s in the early stages of expanding into the broader European market via a new base in Ireland which is exciting. The company said that it expects to grow its customer count to 11 million in the coming year under the leadership of TS Anil. The UK neobank scene appears to be thriving which is great. We currently manage more than 40,000 retail investor positions in Monzo from when they invested in the company between 2016 and 2018. This latest story on Monzo Bank (covered here by Sky News) is obviously great news for the tens of thousands of Crowdcube investors who previously invested in the company. Those that backed the business in 2016 at a pre money valuation of £29m will be especially pleased with themselves. The more interesting story for me is the continued normalisation of large secondary liquidity events for staff while companies continue to remain private. Revolut have done it recently and both they and Monzo have followed their peers in the US in structuring these types of deals. Continued regulatory support with the introduction of things like the Public Offer Platform Regime means companies can turn to both institutional investors AND their customers and retail investors to deliver sizable secondary liquidity events for employees and early investors.
