You deserve me: an entrepreneur, invention idea creator, who doesn't quit or give up. I'm not in debt. I know what companies or who individually to pay to get every single invention idea built, designed, created, and developed. You are bypassing me purposely. This is what is happening. And, I'm not wrong, bad, negative, or lying. I have: the proof of the 163 invention ideas. You have: the proof of the money to pay developers and manufacturers. If you put your money where my mouth is (where I'm claiming proof is), then I will guarantee you will share success with me, because I want success and money just as you want. I know it’s felt like a long, long summer for founders 🥱…But the return of investors is imminent. Hopefully you’ve been using the last few months to get the ‘5 must haves’ in place: 1️⃣ An amazing pitch deck (or two – one wordy version for your investors to read through, one lighter version for you to read through). Oh, hopefully you’ve also practised tirelessly so that the pitch just rolls of the tongue. 2️⃣ A solid forecast model. At least 3 years (and longer as required to show your start-up in a positive light!) and showing your underlying assumptions so that investors can test what happens if you CAC increases, or your LTV decreases etc. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got a basic forecast model to get you going (see link1 in comments). 3️⃣ A valuation justification. We’ve got an article on how to consider this pre-seed/pre-revenue (see link2 in comments). You may not be asked for this immediately, but even a novice investor knows that the valuation is a key negotiating point. 4️⃣ A term sheet. A short document summarising the specifics of the investment and the key rights and protections you’ll be offering investors. We’ve got a guide to the term sheet (see link3 in comments) and you can create a term sheet customised within 5 minutes on FounderCatalyst (see link4 in comments). 5️⃣ SEIS/EIS Advance assurance from HMRC. This is your way of proving to angels that any investment they make in your start-up should benefit from those lovely tax reliefs. Many investors won’t even take a look at your investment until you can show your advance assurance. Thankfully, @foundercatalyst can help – we’ve got an unrivalled success rate and provide this service for free when you commit to a funding round (link5 in the comments). Our latest Carta report on the state of the venture capital industry in 2024 is here. As far as things go, it was a quiet Q1: While more deal data will keep trickling in, it's looking like one of the slowest quarters for startup fundraising in the past several years, with deal count down 29% compared to Q4 2023. Some other takeaways on what's going on in the world of VC and startups: —Companies are embracing (or being forced to embrace) the new valuation environment. 23% of all rounds raised in Q1 were down rounds, the highest down-round rate since at least the start of 2019. —VC investors are looking west. Startups based in the West census region were responsible for 62% of all capital raised in Q1, up from 51% the prior quarter. —The early-stage market slowed down. At the seed stage, both deal count and cash raised fell off by 33% QoQ. —Series B valuations are booming. Over the past two quarters, the median valuation on primary Series B deals has jumped 52%, reaching $118.4 million. —Bridge rounds are booming, too. About 42% of all deals raised by seed-stage startups in Q1 were bridge rounds, the highest quarterly rate on record at that stage. At Series A, bridge rounds made up 43% of all financings.
