🚀 Empowering communities, unlocking potential Our Community ENABLE Funding programme will drive change for underserved businesses across the UK, unlocking up to £150m of additional funding in the next two years. The programme is aimed at social impact lenders like Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) 💡 Why CDFIs matter: These non-for-profit lenders play a crucial role in the social impact sector, providing finance to businesses that mainstream lenders overlook. In 2023, they lent £102m to 4,546 businesses, with 98% of lending going to businesses outside London and 60% supporting disadvantaged areas. The Community ENABLE Funding Programme will enable CDFIs to reach more small businesses, especially those led by underrepresented groups, fuelling local growth, creating jobs, and strengthening communities. Ever thought about the long-term benefits of software modernisation? 🌟 In a recent techUK panel event, experts like Steve Lydford, Codurance's COO, shared invaluable insights on modernising critical legacy systems while maintaining business as usual. With around 70% of digital transformations failing (source: McKinsey 2022), it's vital to adopt strategies that mitigate risks and ensure successful outcomes. One key takeaway was the importance of focusing on core practices and skill sets. Practices such as eXtreme Programming, refactoring, CI/CD, and automated testing can significantly improve the modernisation process. Although adopting these may seem time-consuming initially, the benefits far outweigh the initial effort. Establishing a culture of continuous testing and improvement will enable your team to deliver greater value faster and make systems easier to update in the long run. Moreover, don't fall into the trap of thinking all legacy systems are bad. Sometimes, moving to the cloud without modernising applications can just transfer old problems to a new environment, leading to increased costs. Pragmatic due diligence is crucial. Ask critical questions about the application's importance to the business, outcomes you want to achieve, and potential risks of being vendor-locked. By embracing best practices and creating a culture of continuous improvement, we can set the stage for successful software modernisation. Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) have turned ripples of finance into waves of change for businesses and social enterprises across the UK. They provided opportunity and built resilience for disadvantaged communities and those excluded from mainstream finance. In 2023, their lending hit a record high of £287 million: CDFIs now operate at 31 times the scale they did in 2003, when the sector lent £9.2 million. Their achievements reflect their ability to fill widening needs for the right finance at the right time. Here’s what CDFIs achieved in 2023: 🤝 Supported 4,546 start-ups and SMEs with £102m of loans. 💼 12,135 jobs were created or safeguarded.  ⭐️ 371 social enterprises were supported with £119m of loans. Innovate UK and Catapults supporting innovative SMEs to scale their ideas and business 📈 We are today announcing a pilot scheme that will enable the Innovate UK Catapult Network to support innovative SMEs with disruptive technology in the early stages of their investment journey. The scheme combines convertible loans with wrap-around Catapult support, helping high risk early-stage UK start-ups deliver the proofs needed to secure equity investment from the market. The first three investments will go to Extend Robotics which will work with Digital Catapult, Evoralis which will work with CPI, one of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult centres, and an AI in Drug Discovery company working with the Medicines Discovery Catapult. Innovate UK’s Catapult Network provides a unique combination of cutting-edge R&D facilities and world class technical expertise to support UK business innovation. They are a critical element of Innovate UK’s portfolio of Products and Services – our overall offer to drive business innovation in the UK. Over the coming months, Innovate UK and the Catapults will develop a scalable pilot aiming to make at least 10 investments in 2024/25. This new initiative will enhance national capability across the UK, accelerating commercialisation and the early adoption of technologies and new approaches.
