Servers are one of the biggest costs for a startup. We at Gumlet utilise a lot of GPUs and our bills were skyrocketing. Inspired by the original story of Google and given recent examples of Ahrefs and 37signals, we decided to buy our own GPUs. Venture capital funding raised by UK start-ups dropped sharply in the third quarter of 2024, new research from Dealroom.co has found; adding further pressure for founders in search of new investment.  British start-ups secured around $2.9bn in VC funding in Q3, a 50% drop from the previous quarter but the funding trend is broadly consistent with levels seen in 2023. Fintech has been Britain’s best-funded tech sector so far this year, pulling in $3.3bn, down from $4.5bn in 2023.

This chart from Dealroom is telling. The UK is not the friendliest or simplest place to raise and run a venture fund, yet we are one of the top three tech ecosystems by investment size. How is this possible? Simples, most of the funding is coming from the US. What does this mean? The UK is doing a fantastic job attracting foreign investments, but its tech ecosystem is heavily dependent on said foreign investors. When things are going well, this may not seem significant. However, any crisis that leads to a pullback of international capital will leave UK's startup investment sector in serious trouble.

Paris-based startup Mistral AI has just closed a staggering €600M funding round at a €5.8bn valuation. Their rapid rise showcases the explosive growth and potential of AI. As a heavy user of AI tools in my work at Glafos, I find this AI race very exciting. Thanks to new tech and tooling built on top of it, we can keep our team lean while efficiently writing code, creating content, optimizing customer support, and more. AI enables us to test our ideas, deploy quickly, and maintain a swift learning loop, which is important for an early-stage startup. However, this rapid technological progress comes with significant societal implications. It's estimated that up to 40% of the workforce will need retraining in the next three years. Quite a few customers we work with started their café business without having big budgets. They proved its doable if you are passionate about what you do. Here’s what you can do: 1. Alternative Financing: Look into government grants, like Start-Up Loans or local schemes. You can also pitch your idea to local investors in exchange for equity. 2. Start Small: Launch a pop-up shop or a mobile coffee cart at markets or community events. This reduces the upfront costs of a full shop. 3. Shared Spaces: Partner with an existing business like a bookshop or co-working space and set up a small coffee station in exchange for a share of profits. 4. Barter for Equipment: Offer services like marketing in exchange for coffee supplies or rent equipment to spread out the costs. 5. Free Marketing: Build buzz through social media by documenting your journey and engaging with the local community online. 6. DIY Approach: Handle as much of the work as possible yourself to save on labor and outsourcing costs. 7. Build Community: Focus on creating a welcoming space and hosting events that bring people in. Build relationships first, and profits will follow.

They don't start with a technology or an idea; instead, they integrate insights about global problems and, by actively engaging with advisory boards, founders, and industry experts, identify pain points and align them with technological solutions. I love this quote which comes from Max Pog's paraphrase of his interview with AI and deep-tech venture builder Luke Robinson. It caught my attention because it can be seductive in AI and deep-tech to start with new cool technology and research, and create solutions looking for problems. This, of course, is the cart before the horse and is a deadly and common mistake. Technology is the last mile. Strategy is the first. Just because we can build it and it's cool and state-of-the-art, does not automatically equate to value for the business or customer. I listened to the interview; it’s a terrific lesson in venture building, startups, innovation, and Product. They start with ‘doing a lot of listening’ to see if the pain point is real and ‘out of those problem statements and pain points’ identified, they ‘connect the dots between classes of technology and the pain points.’ Problem and pain point first, then technology. They also ‘extrapolate predictable trends’ which is something Vin Vashishta talks about and is the process of looking to past technological cycles, to predict future technological trends. Then take bets on the opportunities around the corner and try to position themselves for ‘something we believe is coming, but we can smell and prove where it’s going to start today, with some revenue.’ I love all this because it accords perfectly with my own experience and learning.
