Our Co-Founder, Saner Mesçioğlu, recently participated in and led a training session on "Preparing Investor Presentations" as part of Halkbank's #Fintech-focused accelerator program, Hubrica. Drawing from his extensive experience on both sides of the table, he condensed his insights into seven key principles: 📌Know and Analyze Your Investor: Do your homework on the investor beforehand. Gather as much detailed information as possible about their past investments, investment thesis, previous experiences, and current projects. Tailor your presentation accordingly. 📌Create Empathy: Use examples that the investor may have encountered or can easily understand to clearly convey the problem your solution addresses. Create an environment where the investor can empathize with the problem and your team. 📌Amplify, but Don't Exaggerate: While it is understandable and to some extent necessary to present your startup in the best possible light, avoid exaggeration. Overstating your position can erode trust, and rebuilding that trust is challenging. Balance is key. 📌Prepare Backup Slides: Create several slides to address potential questions, but keep the main presentation concise, around 7-8 slides. Use backup slides to show that you've considered and worked on potential questions. Adjust the main slides based on the investor's profile, as each may have different interests. 📌Learn the VC Jargon: Understanding and correctly responding to questions from investors is critical. Be familiar with the specific terms used in VC investments, as mastery of this jargon is essential. 📌Dialogue, Not Monologue: A common mistake is to deliver a monologue, not allowing for questions and interaction. Engage the investors in a dialogue, especially if you are not facing a large committee. Successful presentations often involve the audience step-by-step. 📌No Magic Recipe: Finally, there is no one-size-fits-all recipe. Your presentation should be tailored to your startup, story, investment stage, investor profile, and allotted time. Analyzing these factors and taking appropriate actions is a hallmark of good entrepreneurs.
