And the luxury consumer - who now demands deeper, richer and more brand meaningful experiences. Here I share my thoughts on why newsbrands are particularly well placed to address both of those trends.

An interesting and fun afternoon at Imbibe 24 yesterday. In a hall at London's Olympia packed full of drinks and hospitality brands Beth Marchant and I: - tried nut moonshine (amazing), Moutai (biggest drinks brand in the world with a awe inspiring story, but frankly disgusting!), and a beautiful cocktail from the team at the bar in the Shard's Shangri-La Hotel - learnt that there's no tax on beer up to 3.4% ABV which is why there are so many 3% beers coming out now, that there are around 100,000 wines on sales in the UK, and that during COVID BAME hospitality workers were 26x more likely to lose their jobs - saw so many opportunities for brand design agencies to be at this conference, telling the drinks and hospitality industries about the value they can bring And yet, not a single brand design agency on any stage! OFFF, D&AD, HOW, SXSW - you can't move for brand design agencies, and rightly so. But our industry is missing a trick by not being out and having a presence at conferences in other sectors. For me that isn't the biggest barrier - the general cost and confusion of 'what you get for your money' with a lot of businesses needs addressing rather than jumping on AI as the solution. Why not offer AI as a solution to optimising your ad spend with channels/airtime/programming schedule? That way both the broadcaster and the customer wins... 😅

Faith in Nature" is known for its environmentally-conscious approach to personal care products. The company was founded in 1974 by Rivka Rose with the aim of creating natural beauty products that are ethical and sustainable. Faith in Nature products are made using naturally derived ingredients. Almost fifty years later, it was this same pioneering spirit that prompted them to ask: ‘Can Nature really be the boss? Thrilled to join Drew Neisser's CMO Huddles in London today. WIth fellow panelists, my good mate Sion Lewis CEO CiPHR, and Amanda St L Jobbins CMO Vodafone Business (someone who I have heard so much about over the years but never met) The panel discussion discussed the somewhat delicate relationship between CMO and CEO in tech businesses and how instrumental this is for a CMO to do their job well. Based on alignment with and deep understanding of the goals and motivations of their CEO (which are sometimes not as apparent as you might think) and the business. We also touched on the differences in approaches to marketing in the US and Europe. US software firms are more prepared to build an expansive vision and "story" in the early stages of the business and grow into it, compared to a rather more humble approach in Europe, where the story and message are often smaller than the business and lag behind. Building big companies needs a "big" vision. We should be bolder! CMO Huddles is a US based networking community for technology CMOs, just building a London chapter. Highly recommended, anyone interested DM Drew (he's the one with a Penguin on his head)!

Customer satisfaction declines for second year running across Channel Islands!! Channel Eye According to data from the latest Island Global Research Brand Reputation Index, people in the Channel Islands feel a declining sense of customer satisfaction for selected brands in the finance, retail and island services sectors. Delighted to speak last week at the Silver Marketing Association annual summit on how financial products can be marketed to women in their 40’s and what needs to change.  It's a brilliant conference and really worthwhile attending, and a must for all brands aiming to reach this important and affluent demographic.  In a nutshell, the financial services industry needs to get better and smarter, talk our language and get our attention, find a way on our radar. Financial services companies are waking up to the realisation that by 2030, women will control 70% of all global wealth. The prize is huge! Financial independence allows us to make choices, be in control and live without the fear of running out of money or being dependent on a partner. The Financial services industry needs to: Get our attention! Our lives are busy, characterised by the juggling act of work, family, running our home, and other caring responsibilities. At our recent Family Matters conference, attended by 150+ women, one guest shared how they are lucky if they have 30 minutes a week to focus on herself ! Sound familiar?! Somewhere towards the bottom of the list are our relationships/our self-care/health etc. The last thing on our minds or our radars is planning a rainy-day fund/our pension and putting our money to work. Start talking our language and in a way that means something.  The financial industry is guilty of using macho and patriarchal language, full of acronyms designed to confuse and obfuscate rather than to land with their target audience. It's patronising and doesn't cut through. How about changing the narrative around priorities and goals? Solutions need to be quick, easy, and accessible. Language needs to feel relevant. This is a golden opportunity to empower women to achieve their goals, strive towards financial freedom and take control of their financial future.

𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪?   I watched the documentary Fashion Reimagined, which tells the story of Amy Powney, Creative Director of the cult label Mother of Pearl (MOP), and her ambition to create a sustainable luxury fashion brand. Whilst I'm not in the fashion industry, I feel so inspired about her journey and what she has achieved.   To me, she embodies what someone with a meaningful career can achieve. What I learned was:   𝗕𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 Amy took her off-grid childhood experience, which informed her values and concerns about the environmental impact of the fashion industry to create positive change.   𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻   Amy didn’t know if it was possible to meet her sustainability principles when she set out to launch a sustainable luxury brand, 'No Frills," within 3 months. 𝗕𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲   Rather than focusing on design and then sourcing, Amy had a sustainability-first approach to finding suppliers and materials that met her principles.   𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀   It was difficult to find suppliers who operated sustainably. Buyers were lukewarm, as sustainability was not a big theme across the luxury brands or from consumer insights. Amy kept problem-solving and kept going.   𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀   Amy specifically asked her suppliers to work with a specific wool producer that did not mistreat the sheep rather than accept wool from any supplier. Amy built brilliant relationships with suppliers who had the same sustainability values as her, and she shared with them the finished product.   𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲   Amy created a social media campaign called Fashion Our Future, asking for pledges for individuals to commit to one clothing-related sustainable practice for a year.   𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗼   Amy wasn’t sure of the response of the fashion industry. In the documentary, she said, “if this doesn’t work, then luxury fashion industry is not for me”. Amy couldn’t control the outcome, but she could focus on what felt meaningful to her. So, what happened? Amy cemented herself as one of the leading change catalysts in the UK fashion industry.    From someone who felt she didn't fit in, Amy, is now helping to rewrite the fashion industry rule book.  Bravo Amy!    "Clothes won't change the world. The convergence of channels (duty free, duty paid, food & beverage, lounges, travel essentials) is one of the key dynamics of 'travel retail' in the third decade of the 21st century. And in my view it will only intensify. What's your view?
