RLUK25 Conference 19 - 21 March 2025 The call for papers is now open for the RLUK25 Conference, which will be held in Liverpool from 19-21 March 2025.   The theme of the conference is "Champions of knowledge: Libraries as beacons of trust and integrity". Libraries seek to build their practices on strong foundations of integrity, critical thinking, and ethical values. These foundations underpin a commitment to civic duty, positioning libraries as highly trusted partners and authorities in their communities. In an age of misinformation and disinformation, maintaining information integrity is fundamental to a well-functioning society and democracy. The spread of false narratives, fake news, and censorship poses significant challenges that require a multifaceted approach to address. It is a complex challenge and one in which libraries play a crucial role.   RLUK25 will explore the philosophical and pragmatic challenges for research libraries and their role in upholding the values of trust and integrity. Very proud to have been involved in this project. This has involved deep collaboration, planning, evaluation and TIME. On a personal level, what have I learnt from the experience? Quite a lot and obviously more to come! 1. Digital assessment can be made accessible and contemporary, but requires due consideration on its audience, familiarisation, testing and evolution. 2. Working with leading-edge platforms requires enhanced collaboration, especially within an evolving digital assessment environment. I have no doubt that assessments can only strengthen in their validity and will attract a greater audience, perhaps a proportion of which may have experienced a historic lack of accessibility. 3. Learning from 'sticking points' and identifying alternative ways of working and implementation. Digital assessment may not hold all the answers, but there are definitely not insurmountable issues and platform will evolve to meet future challenges. Part 2: Evaluating Communication Methods in Case Management In this segment, we delve into the choice of communication methods used by support specialists and their impact on case management effectiveness. A data-driven approach is essential to understand how these methods contribute to or hinder effective case management. Cumulative Frequency of Communication Cumulative frequency data reveals a clear preference for emails over phone calls, Zoom meetings, and newsletters. This trend may be attributed to the increased reliance on digital communication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which expanded the use of digital tools for more frequent and two-way interactions (Thomson et al., 2021). However, the lower frequency of phone calls compared to emails suggests a potential imbalance. Real-time communication methods like phone and Zoom calls play a crucial role in handling immediate or complex issues, indicating the need for a strategic balance between digital and real-time communication to effectively address students' needs. Strategic Use of Communication Channels Emails offer convenience and documentation but may lack the personal touch of real-time interactions. Research highlights the importance of direct, real-time communication in building home-school relationships and mutual understanding (Fan & Chan, 2001). While less frequent, phone and Zoom calls allow for more direct and immediate discussions, fostering stronger collaborative relationships. Therefore, a strategic communication plan should integrate various tools, ensuring clarity, responsiveness, and proper documentation. To enhance case management, support specialists should evaluate the strengths and limitations of each communication channel and adopt a balanced strategy tailored to individual student needs. Today Advance HE published a blog co-authored by our DVC, Prof Deborah Johnston MBE, articulating our position that effective partnership with PSRBs will be key to enabling the pedagogic innovation needed to prepare graduates to become the workforce of the future. In the blog post, we invite contributions that showcase examples of working with a PSRB to innovate accredited provision, such as through pedagogic innovation, inclusive academic delivery, or novel assessment methods. After a rigorous selection process, it's thrilling to have my entry shortlisted as one of the top ten entries of the Foundation Chambers annual essay contest. As part of knowledge sharing, I present my key findings as well as my recommendations which I penned down in my entry. Promoting regional integration and trade facilitation in Africa presents several legal challenges that require strategic solutions. One major challenge is the domestication of international agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). For countries with a dualist system, treaties must be approved by national legislatures, which can cause delays in implementation. Accelerating this process is crucial, and member states should collaborate with regional bodies to streamline legislative approval and provide necessary legal expertise. Another challenge is the dispute resolution mechanism under AfCFTA. The Dispute Settlement System (DSM), modeled after the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) dispute system, faces skepticism from some African states due to previous dissatisfaction with formal dispute resolution processes. To overcome this, it is essential for member states to exhibit political commitment to the rulings of the AfCFTA-DSM, avoid forum shopping, and prioritize the AfCFTA dispute system over other regional mechanisms to maintain its credibility. The absence of a unified legal system also complicates regional integration. African states have diverse legal frameworks, which create barriers to seamless trade. Harmonizing trade-related laws, such as tariff bindings and certification processes, across Regional Economic Communities (RECs) can reduce these complexities and facilitate easier trade between member states. Lastly, intellectual property rights (IPR) present a unique challenge, particularly in balancing protection with public health needs and safeguarding traditional knowledge. Differing IPR laws across African nations cause confusion and inconsistencies for businesses. Harmonizing these laws and ensuring the protection of traditional knowledge, especially in areas like African medicine, is essential for promoting fair trade and cultural preservation. In conclusion, resolving these legal challenges requires proactive domestication of agreements, strong political will in dispute resolution, harmonization of legal frameworks, and an inclusive approach to intellectual property protection. These efforts are vital for achieving effective regional integration and trade facilitation under AfCFTA. Thank you, Foundation Chambers!
