Disappointing to hear that the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station has revised their start up date from November to December. The plant has been down since April for a planned maintenance outage, which was supposed to last 90 days. Staff have gone on record stating the extensions are not uncommon as NB Power and PLNGS management have failed to follow experts' direction on this and other outages as well as not following WANO reports on what actions to implement to bring the station back to a high performing plant rather than one of the lowest ranked in the world today. What once used to be the crown jewel of NB Power has over the years become an anchor around the necks of the tax payers of NB. Extended outages caused by mismanagement of personnel and resources, failing to listen to the subject matter experts at the station and replacing them with outside personnel from Ontario, and retired employees, at twice the salary ,station staff receive has caused low morale and constant re-work at PLNGS and added to their debt load unnecessarily. Hopefully the Premier elect will make some much needed changes in the upper management at PLNGS and NB Power, instead of raising the usage rates and installing smart meters in order to charge users premium rates for consuming electricity during normal hours, instead of doing our laundry at 2 in the morning. Placing competent and skilled leaders in key positions, instead of patronage appointments and the "old boys club", is what needs to be done, sooner rather than later. Point Lepreau can be a high performing nuclear facility once again, if the will and courage to correct the areas pointed out in numerous outsiders reports, such as WANO , are actually taken seriously. For now , I fear, PLNGS is rapidly circling the drain!

Weetabix recently held their second annual #WomeninEngineeringDay, where they invited Year 10 students from local schools to their site in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, to learn more about the #engineering careers available to them, tour their site and find out about #apprenticeships. Christine Bryanton, Senior Early Careers Advisor, says, “Creating new opportunities for young people to train, develop and thrive within the sector is a point of pride for us, and especially when it comes to inspiring more women into a field that is typically associated with men.” What an excellent way of encouraging and inspiring people to join the field of engineering. There is such a wide range of opportunities, including the energy sector, sport, music and even – as this article demonstrates – food.

The LNP's nuclear "thought bubble" is at least 10 years too late. If they were really serious they could have provided a comprehensive plan backed with industry collaboration and triple-bottom-line metrics for its viability, during the 9 years they were recently in power in Australia. But they didn't do anything of the sort. It is increasingly becoming evident that their "thought bubble' was just a desperate, political, contrarian position and a means by which to prolong coal-fired power. This despite knowing that not even the owners of the coal fired power stations want to invest big money to maintain and repair them. The owners would rather close them down. Even if miraculously, the legal ban on nuclear power was overturned, the land was secured, financiers put money on the table and engineering studies and design started tomorrow, the nuclear reactors would not likely be built and commissioned until after 2040. So in reality it would be more like 2050. The coal fired power stations will need an enormous amount of money to be poured in, to keep them running till then. Who is going to pay for that? Nobody knows? "Where's the detail"?

The first time I heard about the 'leaky pipe' in retaining women in engineering was at an INCOSE IS 2016 conference presentation by the INCOSE EWLSE group. Recruitment was improving for early careers AND retention after a number of years was going down; with no clearly articulated reason why at exit interviews. I thought it was curious.... 8 years on, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) report on the same observation in the recent IET magazine reporting a spike in women leaving engineering between ages 35-44 years. I was now one of those women. As a woman who left engineering at the age of 46 I have some added lived experience to bring life to the data. I'm now contemplating a return to engineering, having learned enough about the 'midlife landscape' and having developed some internal 'midlife know how' to better navigate the bumpy mid life transition for women. The route back doesn't look a very well trodden one; and there are not many signposts or tourist hotspots to visit on the way. Maybe I'll make it, maybe I won't. The brutal reality historically for women in engineering is that the workplace systems were designed by men for men; and that simply doesn't work well enough for a significant proportion of the engineering community. Noticible differences, such as women's biological lifecycle's consisting of major dynamic neurological transition stages, such as pregnancy and Menopause, are simply not well understood, or catered for, in the workplace. During these transitions a significant proportion of women have different needs; needs which often go unseen and unmet. Which can result in women engineers leaving the workforce and also leaving the conversation on why this happens; leaving organisations with less diversity of thought and 'lived experience' on how to address the 'leaky pipe' problem. And for the women, few handrails to follow or clear and easy routes back. And the pipe will continue to leak... I believe there is much room for improvement in workplace design, culture and strategy than can improve on this. Is this data spike the wake up call for change Hilary Leevers and EngineeringUK are hoping for? Who is doing this important work? How are they harnessing the collective wisdom of the community? How can I contribute? I've got some experience and ideas, based on my own discoveries and strategies I've developed that worked for me, and the women I coach. I'd love to share if anyone wants to hear!!
