This is big news for the solar industry – and an industry first for EDF Renewables UK ☀️ We are partnering with Nature Positive and the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) to study the ecological effects of solar farms at our Longfield solar farm in Essex. It's recognised that solar farms can enhance the local biodiversity, but this research will provide robust data to identify which biodiversity improvements are most effective and help to inform industry best practice in the future. The sun has come out 🌞 This morning the EPA announced awards to 60 Solar For All applications including 49 states and territories, six tribal coalitions, and five innovative multistate awards. One of the five multistate awards is almost $250M to GRID Alternatives -- a ten-organization team HPN joined which is comprised of America’s mission-driven nonprofit solar and affordable housing providers and allies. These investments will operate in over half of the country to expand access to solar and storage for income-qualified households; deep energy savings and burden relief; efficiency and electrification co-benefits; job training and inclusive workforce development opportunities; support for American manufacturing; opportunities for small- and disadvantaged business enterprises; increased community and grid resilience; and community-centered engagement and participatory governance based on relationships of respect and trust.   Thanks to our members and partners who advocated for multistate coalitions to be eligible for these awards!

Today, I had the privilege of representing NextEnergy Capital and contributing to an essential discussion at the APPG PRASEG meeting on Solar Farms, with a focus on Maximising Biodiversity Net Gain & Nature Recovery. It was an insightful session chaired by Alex Sobel with key stakeholders sharing valuable insights and perspectives on integrating biodiversity net gain (BNG) into solar development strategies.   Here are some of the key takeaways from the discussion:   Katie-Jo Luxton emphasised the importance of considering nature alongside climate change efforts. Mitigation hierarchy, BNG mechanisms, and public support were highlighted as essential elements in ensuring solar projects are nature-positive.   Nigel Symes discussed the crucial role of businesses in contributing to nature recovery. He emphasised the need for innovative solutions to optimise value from solar assets while supporting nature conservation efforts.   Rachel Hayes emphasised the multifunctionality of land and stressed the need for comprehensive data collection to inform decision-making for solar projects.   Sue Young rightly pointed out the interconnectedness of climate and nature and stressed the importance of designing and siting solar projects appropriately to ensure gains for nature.   I'm particularly pleased to see RSPB and the Wildlife Trust aligned in their thinking and approach on BNG when it comes to solar. Despite the planning-related challenges we face, I believe the group is absolutely focused on the opportunities the solar sector can bring by integrating and embracing nature and BNG into development and investment. The discussion also underscored the importance of engagement, ensuring that we support the valuation of nature so that people can reconnect with its significance. Additionally, there was emphasis on the importance of evidence and demonstrable outcomes, as well as a possible requirement for a recognised standard, all of which the industry is committed to exploring further.   NextEnergy Capital, with its extensive experience in the solar sector spanning seven countries, remains committed to responsible solar development that prioritises both energy objectives and nature conservation.
