🌍 On 13 November, WBA Chief Executive Charlotte Morton OBE spoke at the #COP29 side event, "The Virtuous Cycle of #Biogas in Agri-Food Systems," held at the Brazil Pavilion. Hosted by Itaipu Binacional and featuring contributions from UNIDO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, and Brazil's Women in Biogas Network (Mulheres do Biogás), the session highlighted biogas as a powerful solution for sustainable agri-food systems. Charlotte shared insights on biogas’s potential to transform waste into renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support rural economies. She also introduced WBA’s #MakingBiogasHappen programme, designed to accelerate global biogas growth through the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and the International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme. Thank you to Itaipu Binacional and COP29 Azerbaijan partners for supporting these critical discussions on biogas and climate action. #Biogas #AnaerobicDigestion #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #ClimateAction #AgriFoodSystems #FoodSystem

Looking forward to participating in this. Valuing more of #anaerobicdigestion's benefits through carbon markets is critical to scaling the industry to cut #methane emissions fast.
🌍 Join us at COP29 for a critical discussion on unlocking the potential of carbon finance for bioenergy in achieving a Net-Zero World! 🌱 The Carbon Markets Association of India (CMAI), in collaboration with the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), is hosting a Panel Discussion on “Unlocking Carbon Finance for Bioenergy Initiatives”. Date: 14th November 2024 Location: H7 Green Zone - Baku, Azerbaijan Time: 3 PM – 4 PM AZT Bioenergy holds immense potential in reducing global emissions, especially in hard-to-decarbonize sectors. However, it remains underrepresented in global carbon markets. This session will explore how carbon finance can support bioenergy projects, focusing on innovative strategies to bridge financing gaps, promote market development, and foster technology transfer. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the conversation on advancing a sustainable energy future! 🌍💡 #BuildingCarbonMarketsTogether Contact us at: [email protected] Rohit Kumar Bikash Sahu Ayushi Gaur Sruthy Jacob Mohit Gautam Upansh Srivastava Bianca Gichangi Siddhant Gupta Dhanish Goyal Charlotte Morton OBE World Biogas Association Isaac Kabongo Benjamín Murguía Jiménez #COP29 #SolarCleanCooking #NetZero #CarbonMarkets #SustainableEnergy #CleanCooking #ClimateAction #CMAI #ISA #CarbonCredits #GreenFinance #ClimateFinance #NetZeroTransition #EnergyAccess #Baku2024 #Sustainability #UNFCCC #COP29 #GlobalCooperation #CarbonMarkets #Article6 #ParisAgreemen #GlobalSouth #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateLeadership #GreenTransition #IndustryVoice #FutureOfCarbonMarkets #InclusiveClimateAction #VCM #VCMI #ICVCM #CCTS #ETS #Offset #SustainableDevelopment #PMO #MOP #MOEFCC #BEE #MOCI #MOPNG #CPCB #EPR

#COP29’s focus on climate finance must unlock #financing for methane mitigation from #solid waste. Today just 2% of #climate #finance goes to #methane #mitigation (Reuters 2023). Of that, a tiny proportion goes to #waste management, and of that an even tinier proportion goes to organics recycling – US$3.9bn goes to incineration vs a mere US$22m on #organics #recycling including #biogas, despite #organics representing over 50% of municipal solid waste in most countries. Critically, 2.7bn people today lack any formal waste collection (UNEP 2024). Yet recycling the 105bn tonnes of organic wastes humans generate every year (#foodwaste, #sewage, #manures and slurries, other agri-wastes, commercial/industrial wastes) through #biogas would deliver 50% of the Global Methane Pledge, reducing global temperature rise by a critical 0.1 degree Celsius. It would also generate sufficient biogas to displace one third of today’s fossil gas consumption. Today the World Biogas Association hosted its first #COP29 official side event entitled “Unlocking the Potential for Financing Methane Mitigation from Solid Waste for the NDCs and Beyond”, where we presented our G20 paper (https://lnkd.in/ekxfpFgh) on the same topic, co-authored by the ISWA International Solid Waste Association and TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, in which we made two main recommendations: 1. Valorisation of Methane Abatement 2. Targeting Climate Finance to Financing Waste Collection and Treatment that prioritise high in waste hierarchy activities. With thanks to our panellists Martina Otto, Head of Secretariat of the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, Anja Schwetje, Vice Chair, Climate Change and Waste Management Working Group, ISWA International Solid Waste Association, Alfredo Miranda-González, Deputy Director for International Methane, Clean Air Task Force, Janek Vähk, Zero Pollution Manager, Zero Waste Europe, and our panel chair Pradeep Monga Ph.D. The COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency will launch the first ever Declaration on Methane Reduction on organic wastes, which sets a precedent for other countries to follow, building the political commitment that can lead to unlocking the finances needed to build the necessary waste collection, treatment and energy infrastructure to turn these waste resources into #value. The WBA has developed its model Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme for countries to adapt to their local environment, creating the necessary enabling environment to facilitate the development of bankable biogas projects. #MakingBiogasHappen.

Earlier today, WBA's Senior Advisor and Policy Director Pradeep Monga Ph.D spoke at the ISWA International Solid Waste Association #COP29 side event titled 'How should we reflect the waste sector in #ClimateMitigation and adaptation?' If you missed Dr Monga's presentation, there’s still an opportunity to connect with him at #COP29 in Baku. To arrange a meeting, please contact Giulia Ceccarelli, Head of External Affairs at WBA, at [email protected]. You also have the opportunity to hear Dr Monga speak today at the WBA COP29 side event, co-hosted with ISWA, titled "Unlocking the Potential for Financing Methane Mitigation from Solid Waste for the NDCs and Beyond." This event is scheduled for today, 13 November 2024, from 16:45 to 18:15 (Baku time) in Side Event Room 9, Area B, Blue Zone, at the COP29 venue in Baku, Azerbaijan. The session will address the financing gap for methane action in the solid waste sector and explore potential solutions, including the presentation of the WBA and ISWA's G20 Policy Paper on scaling up financing for #MethaneMitigation from #SolidWaste.
Join #ISWAatCOP at COP29 Azerbaijan, where two sessions will be held tomorrow at the #WasteandResources Pavilion in the Green Zone! We kick things off in the morning with a panel on how the waste sector can be reflected in #climatemitigation and adaptation, followed by another panel on the impact of management choices on #landfills and #closingdumpsites. Thank you to our speakers and partners for their support and participation - we look forward to sharing their insights with our audience at #COP29 and beyond! Looking forward to participating in this event next week at #COP29 to highlight how we can reduce #methane #emissions from the 105bn tonnes of #organic wastes we humans generate every year, preventing nearly 0.1 degree of temperature rise and the #pollution they otherwise cause to rivers and #oceans. All these #wastes also contain around one third of today's global #gas consumption and valuable #nutrients, so #recycling these would help to improve the world's #energy and #food security, create a multi-billion dollar #economic #opportunity and 10-15 million new green #jobs globally.
