During her #hearing, Teresa Ribera made it clear: the EU must balance ambitious climate targets with practical, fair solutions. “We need to honour our commitment to fulfil a decarbonised European economy by 2050. We have time, but not so much, and we need to do many things in a very short period of time in many different sectors.", said Teresa Ribera. But here is the key: there is no net zero without biogases! 💡 The biogas sector is ready to take on this challenge and plays a crucial role in tackling climate change: 🌱 Avoiding methane emissions on farms 🔄 Replacing fossil CO2 and fossil fuels in energy uses ⚡️ Supporting the growth of other renewables in the energy system “Looking beyond 2030, the EU climate and energy framework should actively support emissions reductions through biogas and biomethane systems by streamlining regulations and removing barriers to production, use, and trade.”, explains Anthony Lorin, EBA Senior Policy Analyst. #biogas #biomethane #NetZero

The European Biogas Association is the leading European non-governmental organisation promoting renewable gas in Europe.
About us
European Biogas Association (EBA) was founded in February 2009 as a Belgian non-profit organisation aiming to promote the deployment of sustainable biogas production and use in Europe. This covers all energetic applications of biogas like heat, electricity and automotive fuel. EBA’s membership comprises national biogas associations, institutes and companies from over 20 countries all across Europe. The member associations cover the majority of producers, companies, consultants and researchers in the field of biogas within Europe. EBA’s strategy defines three priorities: establish biogas as an important part of Europe’s energy mix, promote source separation of household waste to increase the gas potential and support the production of biomethane as vehicle fuel.

In yesterday’s hearing, Stéfane Séjourné outlined an ambitious vision for the Clean Industrial Deal, emphasising key cross-sectoral initiatives to support Europe’s green transition. These initiatives include simplifying regulatory frameworks, reducing permit delays, and lowering energy costs to help European industries adopt cleaner technologies. 🙌 One such technology with immense potential is biomethane: a game-changer in reducing the climate impact of industries. By replacing traditional fuels with biomethane, industries can cut emissions without changing their infrastructure. 📌 As Anthony Lorin, EBA Senior Policy Analyst, explains, “a critical step forward would be to achieve a Single Market for biomethane. Currently, the market remains fragmented, with significant barriers to cross-border trade. The new Commissioner should prioritise addressing these issues as part of the upcoming Single Market Strategy, which would lead to easier access to biomethane for industries.” #biomethane #biogas

In today’s hearing, Commissioner-Designate Wopke Hoekstra committed to advancing proposals for a post-2030 climate policy framework to enable a predictable, fair, and cost-efficient transition. 💡 The biogas value chain can reduce GHG emissions in various ways, including avoiding methane emissions on farms, replacing fossil CO2 and fossil fuels in energy uses, and supporting the growth of other renewables in the energy system. 🎯 Given this, the post-2030 climate and energy framework should fully take into account the emissions reduction potential of biogas and biomethane systems, offering them appropriate support. A key part of this future framework is the transition in the energy taxation of Member States. Hoekstra promised to work towards unlocking the Council’s negotiations on the Energy Taxation Directive revision. “You do need to tax renewables less than coal and you need a hierarchy”, he said. 📌 As Anthony Lorin, EBA Senior Policy Analyst points out, “Today, by default, biogases are taxed like natural gas. A fiscal recognition of biogases EU-wide and a fair lower minimum tax level will send a positive price signal for the shift to green gases”. #biogas #biomethane #taxation

🚀 Flashes from the #Biomethaverse Pilot Sites: where innovations in biomethane are taking shape. 🔹 France: The ENGIE BiOZ pilot site has moved to Coëvrons Mayenne, offering similar specifications to the original Eppeville site. Covering 2.6 hectares, it produces 2 million m³ of CH4 annually and has a capacity of 21 GWh, enough renewable gas to supply 1,900 homes, with up to 220 Nm³/h injected into the grid. 🔹 Italy: Significant advancements were made in the Italian case study with the completion of the ozonolysis plant installation. This includes a 12 m³ liquid oxygen tank, an ozone generator, and, most importantly, the contact reactor, where sludge and ozone will interact to enhance methane production. 🔹 Greece: The Greek demo is making significant progress in optimizing its biogas-to-biomethane conversion technology. The team is currently focussing on refining the reactor’s design, a key component in ensuring the effective upgrading of raw biogas into high-purity biomethane. The reactor serves as the core of the demo, where biogas undergoes a three-step thermocatalytic methanation process. 🔹 Sweden: In Höganäs, the Swedish demo plant has begun long-term trials on biological methanation of syngas from biomass gasification. A key collaboration between Wätsilä and RISE has made this possible. 🔹 Ukraine: The war has severely impacted the Ukrainian biogas sector. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, 17 GW of Ukrainian power generation has remained occupied. Beginning in March 2024, an additional 9 GW have been damaged or completely destroyed.
