Last weekend, we visited Bus Whisky in Nistelrode, Netherlands. Dubbed the most sustainable distillery in the world, it was impressive to see their dedication to environmental stewardship. We learned about their unique water source from the Peelrand fault, their regenerative farming, and energy-efficient production methods. Yesterday, I was at the US Embassy to discuss American whiskey and imports into the UK. In March 2024, 141,000 litres of bourbon (excluding other American whiskey) were imported into the UK from the US (Distilled Spirits Council, 2024). Below is a breakdown of some data from Whisky Brokers Associates, providing insights into UK customers purchasing bourbon. Average Order and Coupon Usage   The average order value for bourbon purchases on our website is £132. Around 15% of these orders utilise a voucher, indicating a portion of customers are price-sensitive and look for deals when making their purchases.   Customer Purchase Behaviour   Approximately 15-20% of customers tend to make multiple purchases when buying bourbon. Notably, 85% of these customers, who make multiple purchases in a single transaction.   Price Range and Peak Purchasing Periods   Bourbon price points vary on our website, currently ranging from £35 to £695. The peak purchasing periods are in December, coinciding with holidays, and during the months of April and May, possibly linked to gifting occasions such as Father’s Day and Spring events.   New Purchases and Consumption Trends   85-90% of bourbon purchases are from new customers. This does not indicate a lack of repeat business but rather reflects the quick sell-out of certain high-demand stock (Blanton's for example). These higher-end bottles are typically reserved for special occasions rather than regular consumption, highlighting their status as premium products.   Bundle Purchases and Popular Brands   Customers are generally open to purchasing bourbon in bundles alongside other whiskies. Blanton’s bourbon stands out as the most popular choice due to its regular, albeit limited release. Limited editions, such as Woodford Reserve Masters Brandy Cask Finish, also performed well in the past and have a quicker sell life.   Website Interaction and Purchasing Patterns   Customer engagement on our website shows that page session views range from 2 to 50 unique pages per session. This suggests that when customers find a desired bourbon in stock, they act quickly to purchase it. Those who spend more time browsing the website tend to buy multiple bottles, indicating a thorough decision-making process and higher overall spending.   Core Stock Versus Limited Editions   Core stock items (<£50), which are not limited in number and are always available, tend to remain on the site for longer periods. This is primarily due to the availability of these products in nearby supermarkets or shops. Limited edition whiskeys are often consumed neat or with ice, while bottles priced under £50 are typically used in cocktails, such as an Old Fashioned.

On Monday night, Mangrove Global Ltd. invited us to the private launch of Red Bank Whisky in the UK. Red Bank was co-founded by Kiefer Sutherland (best known for starring in the TV series 24), the night saw us try Red Bank in some fabulous cocktails and enjoy a musical performance from Kiefer at the Underbelly Boulevard in Soho. What was also amazing to see was the power of advertising, Kiefer appeared on a morning programme discussing Red Bank and 4 minutes into his appearance, orders started to come through on our website with a new SEO strategy we implemented.
