The collectible ultra-rare whisky space has had some quite noteworthy releases in recent years. However, this exquisite 50 year old whisky bottling, released back in 2017, from Loch Lomond Group was ahead of the curve and set the tone for levels of detail delivered in a whisky product. Excellence isn’t found in the price, it is found the meticulous attention to detail. From the hand carved ‘charred’ display case, to the gold inlay around the key and logo, to the engraved and infilled bottle and the leather embossed door panels. It is a piece worthy of display. Just 60 bottles were released making this a rare find indeed. We recently had the pleasure of visiting the workshop where this finely crafted display case was produced, an artisan here in Scotland with a passion for creating beautiful things. Annandale Distillery has a fascinating history dating back to 1830. It had changed hands several times over its history and was even once owned by a famous whisky name - John Walker & Sons - before being closed completely and the site being left ruin. That was until two new owners vowed to bring the site and the brand back to full operation, with the first spirits to run off the stills back in November 2014. Tailored Spirits Co. were invited along to the distillery to celebrate the milestone achievement of 10 years since the re-opening. Along with distinguished guests, including the Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and the passionate co-founders of the new distillery, we tasted the very first drams of the now decade old spirit. BenRiach - now considered one of the pioneers in Scotch whisky styles - is a distillery with a tumultuous history. Having been mothballed on multiple occasions even as recently as 2001, it is a story of resilience and perseverance. The distillery has the unique position of being one of Speyside’s long standing producers (1897) but not being bound and directed by that heritage. They are uniquely modern in their approach to bending the rules, producing one of the few Peated spirits in Speyside, while also experimenting with triple distillation and malting on-site for flexibility with flavour. If you know whisky, you’ll know that the cask does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to maturing memorable whisky. Some suggest as much as 70-80% of a dram’s final character comes from the cask it has matured in. The highly skilled coopers at Speyside Cooperage perform a vital role in the whisky industry, making and re-making millions of casks. This much revered skill isn’t easy to come by, with an intensive 4 year apprenticeship to be able to earn your stripes. Becoming a cooper is often generational, with skills passed down from father to son for hundreds of years and it’s quite a sight to behold.
