"The operating room has been analogue for most of my surgical practice. The future OR will be of course digital and will be powered by data and artificial intelligence. The analogue surgeon will be replaced by the digital surgeon." - Professor Shafi Ahmed
We are thrilled to welcome Professor Shafi Ahmed to our Advisory Board! A surgeon, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Prof. Shafi has earned the title of the ‘world’s most watched surgeon.’ He is a distinguished faculty member at institutions such as Harvard Medical School, Imperial College London, UCL, and more. In recognition of his humanitarian work in Gaza, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. Prof. Shafi has made an immense impact on the surgical space globally and we’re honored to have him join us as we work together toward shaping the AI-powered operating rooms of the future!

I am delighted to join VitVio as an advisor, a company that is revolutionising the operating room. The operating room has been analogue for most of my surgical practice. The future OR will be of course digital and will be powered by data and artificial intelligence. The analogue surgeon will be replaced by the digital surgeon. The introduction of laparoscopic surgery and robotics during my career has helped this transition, but we need to make the OR more efficient and to support better outcomes. VitVio autonomously tracks and analyses surgical procedures, tool usage, and processes in real-time with computer vision and AI — increasing the number of surgeries performed per day, reducing delays, improving communication actionability, and reducing the likelihood of readmissions. The waiting list for hospital treatment in the UK has reached a staggering 7.6 million patients, and the 18-week treatment target has not been met since 2016. The NHS currently allocates an estimated £4.5 billion for surgical procedures and operating rooms (ORs) contributing to 40% of hospital spending. This financial burden is poised to escalate with increasing waiting lists. On top of this, current hospital processes are excessively manual and inefficient — data logging, calling for staff members, checking surgery status — every single of these tasks costs time, money and takes the attention away from patients. VitVio’s AI vision platform replaces manually collected, imprecise inputs, with ground-truth autonomously captured data to improve operating block efficiency and patient outcomes. The team at VitVio are some of the most talented young people that I have met who have already built previous successful companies. They have a proven track record in the autonomous retail sector, where they successfully outpaced Amazon Go in both store count and receipt accuracy. They have already deployed autonomous stores with the likes of Carrefour, Aldi, Dollar General, and many more. I look forward to this exciting journey with this truly talented and ambitious team who will make my life as a surgeon all the better. FYI: Rafael J. Enhancing surgical efficiency is crucial for improving patient outcomes and optimizing healthcare resources. A recent study published in Patient Safety in Surgery highlights the significant impact of operating room organization on surgical performance. Improving intra-day scheduling and minimizing disturbances were found to be one of the key factors in reducing operative time, enhancing patient safety, and controlling costs. By using systems like VitVio, healthcare facilities can achieve more efficient surgical processes, leading to better patient care and resource utilization.
