About us

We are UK Coaching. Through our commitment to people, passion and progress, we’re taking the lead in coaching excellence. Our mission is to put coaching at the heart of physical activity and sport. Coaching is in our DNA. For more than 30 years, alongside our partners, we have provided the coaching workforce with the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive difference. We’ve also supported our partners to do the same. We’re now widening our scope to do this on a broader scale. How? By adopting a wider definition of coaching and extending our reach into new markets where great coaching makes a difference every day. We’re here to: * Raise the profile of coaching so that it is recognised for the wider benefits it brings to society and individuals. * Help our partners create coaching systems to deliver a fit for purpose workforce that better reflects society. * Make coaching easier to get into and stay involved in. * Supply the coaching workforce with the information they need to be participant focused. * Be a hub of research excellence for coaching * Help coaches feel better connected, more knowledgeable and confident. * Be central to the sport and physical activity landscape. We’ll run an effective and efficient organisation. * Encourage technology to enable coaches and coaching. In England, we support National Governing Bodies of Sport and County Sports Partnerships as well as many other organisations across the sport and physical activity landscape. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, we work with the three Home Country Sports Councils.

  • Coaches support athletes day in, day out: here's why we celebrated them at Buckingham Palace:

  • How can coach development support the wide range and large numbers of community coaches in the UK? Community coaches are vital for promoting participation and delivering physical, social, and emotional benefits. However, they face numerous challenges. Northumbria University and Liverpool John Moores University for UK Coaching, explored how to better support these coaches through Appreciative Inquiry (AI). Key Findings: Challenges: Balancing participation with performance, inclusivity, adapting to changes, and club politics. Support Needs: Continuous learning, structured support, and better guidance for volunteer coach developers. Martin Dighton, Senior Coach Developer at UK Coaching, said: "Access to a coach developer is an opportunity afforded to relatively few coaches in sport. Support within community sport should come from within clubs. Identifying, training, and supporting coach developers is crucial.” Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/3VGHNdn For further discussion please contact Martin Dighton at [email protected].

  • UK Coaching was pleased to host the 2024 UK Coaching Summit, dedicated to the development of coaches. This event highlighted our commitment to evolving with the times while balancing tradition and the emergence of contemporary sports breaking new boundaries in coaching and coach development. Key elements in the development of the 3.1 million coaches in the UK include: Tradition Time Cost People Culture …and embracing the unknown. British Rowing shared their inspiring journey of transforming their coaching system over the past four years. Their approach, rooted in care, connection, curiosity, context, and coaching streams, has involved the coaching community to ensure excellent experiences for both coaches and rowers. We also looked at the distinction between Coach Education and Coach Development, emphasising the need for clarity in these roles to better support the coaching workforce. Our discussions underscored the shift towards holistic coaching development, fostering informed choices and deeper connections to the coach’s context and sport. The importance of community and cross-sport learning was a key theme. Coaches thrive in a supportive community, which fosters a sense of belonging and lifelong social learning. Creating these communities requires careful consideration and effort. Northumbria University presented their research on coach development in community settings, highlighting the often-overlooked importance of community coaches. Their report, featuring six narratives and nine recommendations, sheds light on the challenges and opportunities in this vital area. A huge thank you to UK Coaching’s Coaching Team for their exceptional planning and facilitation, to British Rowing for their honesty and innovation, and to Northumbria University for their insightful research. • So many fabulous memories and inspirational moments from our UK Coaching Awards but a special thanks goes to Katarina Johnson-Thompson and her Coaching Chain. We loved hearing from Katarina's early coaches about how they supported her development through primary school and athletics club along with Katarina's tributes to them. Thank you Richard Coakley, Jo Hardiman, Gayle Gilbert and Val Rutter for sharing your stories. Thank you Tanya Arnold for an engaging discussion: more fascinating insight from Katarina's current coach and 'polisher of diamonds' Aston Moore who says he just 'coaches the person in front of him'. #GreatCoaching really does change lives.
