UCL ranked 1st in the UK and 5th globally in QS Sustainability Rankings! UCL has achieved outstanding recognition in the 2025 QS Sustainability Rankings, securing 1st place in the UK, 3rd in Europe, and 5th globally. With an overall score of 98.6 out of 100, the rankings highlight UCL’s leadership in addressing global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges.  Key highlights from the rankings: 📚1st in the UK and globally in Knowledge Exchange, recognising the impact of UCL’s global partnerships that drive educational growth and create positive social progress. 🌱1st in the UK and 3rd globally in Health and Wellbeing, reflecting UCL’s commitment to student and societal wellbeing through initiatives such as achieving the Mental Health Chartermark and delivering evidence-based mental health support. 🌍️ 1st in the UK and 5th globally in Environmental Sustainability, highlighting achievements such as 56% reduction in carbon emissions, a 60% cut in waste per person since 2019, and the opening of PEARL, our first net-zero carbon building. UCL is continuing its sustainability leadership with the introduction of a new UCL Sustainability Plan in 2025. Work/Life Hacks for Women in Academia: Three "hacks" shared by participants   Funded by the UCL Research Culture Seed Fund, the first session of the "Work/Life Hacks for Women in Academia" series focused on some of the key challenges women face in academia. Below are three practical "hacks" shared by participants during the workshop to help navigate these challenges more effectively. 1️⃣ Being heard when you say “No”: Participants stated it’s important to set boundaries and communicate them clearly. Have a list of responses that help you justify to yourself why it’s okay to say no. For example:  ✨ “I’ve exceeded my capacity to take on more at the moment.”  ✨ “If you’d like me to do this, I’ll need to drop x, y, or z.” (Make sure x, y, and z are tasks you are willing to let go of.)  ✨ “I’ve spoken to my manager, and they have advised me not to take on anymore.” 2️⃣ Balancing family and career: Participants explored the often-delayed decision of starting a family due to work pressures. The takeaway? There’s never a “perfect” time. Starting a family, if it’s right for you, has a positive side to it and can help with developing maturity. It was also noted that there is a need for positive role models who successfully balance family and work. 3️⃣ Overcoming the pressure to overachieve: Participants also added that the drive to overachieve can take a toll on well-being. One suggestion? Prioritise self-care without guilt. Think of it as social prescribing, much like taking your medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor.
