"As resident Data Analyst at Stellar, I’m always looking for ways to help improve the efficiency of our clients’ ad campaigns. So my ears pricked up this week when Google highlighted their new Marketing Mix Modelling (MMM) product, Meridian, during their Q3 earnings call. Hitesh Wadhwani, the lead product manager, announced Meridian's full launch for early 2025. Why is this so exciting? 1. Google Query Volume (GQV) Integration – This feature reduces the risk of overestimating lower-funnel marketing impacts by factoring in search demand. 2. Experiment Data Support – Meridian allows the seamless integration of regional experiment data, making it easier to measure the impact of different ad spend strategies across locations for more accurate insights. Although these features are not novel (I’ve myself tussled with how best to include these features in our own MMM framework), Google aims to provide incredibly simple incorporation, lowering the barrier to entry. In other words, currently lower funnel accuracy and experimental data are big sticking points for marketers interested in MMM. Google’s move to add these data-movement features on top of the core statistical model confirms my own personal experience, that convenience of data movement and connectivity is a high priority for users. In Meta’s first EU user report, covering the period between April to September 2023, both platforms had the same user count, at 259 million MAU. What should digital marketers prioritise when creating video ads? 🤔 To answer this, we might take a leaf out of what YouTube's doing. A study with 2,000 video viewers in the U.K. conducted by YouTube found that emotion was more valued by the audience than technical proficiency. Emotion included things like: - Captures my attention throughout - Tells a compelling story or narrative - Is original or creative, or offers a unique perspective - Teaches me something new or useful - Really means something to me personally - Enhances or helps me in everyday life - Is relevant to my interests and preferences - Is authentic and relatable - Helps me reflect or clarify my thoughts - Is emotionally engaging When drilled down further, the specific emotional characteristics people were looking for showed a high degree of consistency, with 88% agreeing that high-quality content should be meaningful, and 91% agreeing that it should be relevant and relatable. Viewers older than 35 valued trustworthiness and compelling storytelling, while younger viewers prioritised creativity and personal relevance. Audiences have come to crave a deeper connection with the content they consume. Vogue’s makeup tutorials on YouTube are filmed in celebrities’ own homes with minimal gloss and editing, offering a level of authenticity and access that was previously unthinkable. Audiences want stories that capture their attention, that make them laugh, that relate to their lived experiences, or that simply move them. So when creating your next video ad campaign, consider prioritising storytelling and emotional resonance over simply selling your product - you may find that in doing so, your audience will attach to your brand emotionally, and as a consequence naturally increase your ROI.
