𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐊𝐄𝐀 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞? I did once or twice. The best way to avoid a wonky shelf or a three-legged chair is to take it one step at a time - regardless of whether you follow their instructions. The same goes for startups. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐊𝐏𝐈𝐬 are probably set; now all you have to do is 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫, 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬. If not, they can feel like a faraway dream, overwhelming, especially if progress is slower than expected (and it often is!) Earlier this week, I chatted with a founder trying to sum up months of work and progress. And let's be honest: 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐮𝐩𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞. There will be moments of progress, followed by what feels like a plateau. But often, what we don't realise until we take a 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 is that those quieter moments are where things actually happen. Small actions, though they might not seem significant at the time, 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 and eventually become those huge leaps forward you are working towards. Here’s how to make your goals feel less like 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 and more like a 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥: ✅ Start with the Big Picture What’s your ultimate goal? 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 and keep it visible. ✅ Reverse Engineer 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 to identify your milestones. Same as if you were following a treasure map. ✅ Make Them SMART If your goals don’t fit this criteria, you might just be daydreaming. ✅ Set Short-Term Targets Break them down into 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬. Stepping stones not giant leaps. ✅ Track Progress Find an 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐲 or a mentor. Do you have one? Regular check-ins will keep you on course. Since we approach the end of the year, now is the perfect time to 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 and 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 for what’s next. Ready to take your strategy to the next level? When to choose growth vs. profitability? We had a great discussion with founders during yesterday's sclr labs roundtable, with Jürgen Vleminckx expertly facilitating and sharing insights on growth, scaling, and how they relate to investment, costs, and profit. The main difference between scaling and growing is the focus on cost. The key is finding the right balance for your business stage and market conditions. The roundtable also touched on the importance of considering industry dynamics, business models, and available resources when deciding between prioritising growth or profitability.
