About us

SATRA is an independent research and testing organisation established in 1919. It has technical facilities in the UK and China serving customers throughout the world. As well as testing products and components to European and international standards across a wide range of industry sectors, SATRA develops, manufactures and sells test equipment. SATRA is a Notified Body for various European directives including personal protection equipment (PPE), which is one of SATRA’s largest sector operations. SATRA has its own chemicals analysis laboratory for testing restricted substances in accordance with European REACH, and US chemicals regulations for which it is CPSC-accredited. SATRA is considered a leading technical authority for footwear and leather and companies from these industries can become members of SATRA to gain exclusive access to SATRA test methods, accreditation, consultancy, research facilities, technical training and factory production management systems. A number of SATRA systems are recognised in the supply chain as setting industry standards for quality and production efficiency. As well as the knowledge and experience of its technologists, what distinguishes SATRA is the volume of technical information it has published since 1935 in the form of magazines and books to help promote quality, excellence and professionalism throughout consumer products industries. Much of this information is now available online.

It’s not everyday His Royal Highness Prince William wears your shoes. You can only imagine my surprise when I flicked on the Earthshot Prize to see the future king sporting a pair of PURIFIED shoes. I came up with the idea of PURIFIED not far from the Sandringham estate. On my frequent walks Along Holkham beach, I felt a disconnectedness between product design and nature, the goal was to create a better path where the two were more aligned. So it only Feels fitting for things to come full circle and have such a well respected figure champion our shoes at such a prestigious event. It’s amazing to be represented at the Earthshot Prize among so many world-changing companies who share our vision for a sustainable future. How could I forget our remarkable material partners, NFW, to whom I am so grateful for their work over the last four years of my design journey. As a small business, one that only launched in April no less, we don’t often see these moments. To have the brand championed by such a well-respected figure at such an important occasion was an incredible moment, but also a golden opportunity to show the world that truly sustainable footwear design is possible. Thanks to all who have supported us on the journey so far. This is still just the start! Basic shoemaking step-by-step. December 4th & 5th. This two-day course is an introduction to the shoemaking process. It is especially suited to those who are new to the industry and want a broad grounding in the topic. It is an excellent opportunity to meet and learn face to face with SATRA experts. Using actual shoemaking materials, examples of product types, printed handouts and videos, our footwear consultants explain and discuss each subject, covering key footwear materials such as leather, synthetic and textile uppers, sole materials and reinforcing components such toe puffs and stiffeners, as well as discussing finishing and inspection of finished footwear. The course also includes a tour of our test laboratory. The September 2024 issues of SATRA's Footwear, Furniture and Consumer Products Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs) are now available. SATRA RSLs contain information about restricted substances that are applicable to the materials typically used in footwear, furniture and consumer products. The entries are listed alphabetically and the materials most relevant to the substances are indicated in the “Applicable Materials” table. SATRA revises these RSLs every six months to include any changes to restricted substances legislation that are relevant to the footwear, furniture and consumer products sectors – such as amendments to REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) Annex XVII, UK REACH and the POP Regulation (EU) 2019/1021. The REACH Annex XVII entry 63 requirement is extended from limiting total lead in jewellery and children’s items to also include PVC articles which applies from 29th November 2024. Each list can be downloaded from the SATRA website, with the Footwear and Furniture lists being exclusively available to SATRA members. For more information about chemical testing, contact [email protected] or visit our website https://lnkd.in/epA-jbMt #ChemicalCompliance #RestrictedChemicals #chemistry #REACH #regulations
