Our PhD student Laurie Gale has developed a tool to enable KS3/4 (11-16 year old) students learning Python programming in school to use a more reflective process when debugging programs that don't run or don't work as intended. The tool is called PRIMMDebug and you can read about it, and see it in action by reading his blog post: https://lnkd.in/eYWtbb2D. Laurie developed this after an extensive investigation into what students did actually do when faced with programs they needed to debug. The next stage of the research is to get some feedback from (UK-based) teachers and students about this tool and whether it's useful. We'd love just a few more teachers who might like to try this out. As described in Laurie's blog post, it will involve firstly a demo of the tool, then using the tool in some computing lessons, and then completing survey/interview to offer some feedback. At the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre we conduct research into the teaching and learning of computing and AI. If you'd like to hear about more studies you could participate in, sign up to our Teacher Research Newsletter at this link: https://lnkd.in/eMmYNTaH Thanks!

Furthering our understanding of computing education in school
About us
The Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre is based in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge. The Centre is a joint initiative between the University and the Raspberry Pi Foundation and offers an exciting opportunity to combine expertise from across both institutions to deliver a step-change in computing education. The Centre seeks to achieve long-term impact by conducting original research as well as working with its partners to turn new research results into practice, including by working closely with the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s educational programmes. The aim of the Centre is to increase our understanding of teaching and learning computing, computer science, and associated subjects, with a particular focus on young people who are from backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in the field of computing or who experience educational disadvantage.

I’m delighted to share the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre Annual Report 2024. https://lnkd.in/ebdy3ZfS We hope you enjoy reading what we’ve been up to! I’m very proud of everyone in the team and the insights we’ve gained through our research this last year. I’m also grateful to everyone reading this who has made all this work possible: 👏 Thanks to everyone in the team for their hard work! 👏 Thanks to the too-many-to-mention teachers, schools and students who have been part of our research projects and worked closely with us 👏 Thanks to colleagues in other research institutions who advise us, review our work, and generally keep us going, as well as our home base at University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology 👏 A final massive thanks for the support we have received to make this work possible: Raspberry Pi Foundation, Micro:bit Educational Foundation, BBC, Nominet, Google DeepMind The Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre (RPCERC) is based at the University of Cambridge, a joint initiative between the Department of Computer Science and Technology and the Raspberry Pi Foundation. RPCERC seeks to achieve long-term impact by conducting original research as well as working with its partners to turn new research results into practice, including by working closely with the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s educational programmes.

If you're a Y3-5 teacher in England and Wales, or P4-6 in Scotland and NI, there's still time to take part in our physical computing class activity and survey. Full details are on the Computing At School website with a handy video explaining what's involved! https://lnkd.in/eHyTVFuV This is a 5-year study exploring children's creativity, self-efficacy and agency around technology when given opportunities to learn with physical computing. We're at the beginning of the study now so no experience is needed as we are looking at the start point for children at this age. More details are on our website too: https://lnkd.in/dsu4wtVK Thank you in advance for supporting this project!

Take part in our micro:bit class activity and surveys! If you are a UK primary teacher and have a set of micro:bits we'd be really grateful if you could contribute to our research by carrying out a short activity this September. More information here: https://lnkd.in/eEwtCrSW
We've shared details of our project exporing physical computing in schools (EPICS). Now we would love you to contribute to this if you are teaching primary education anywhere in the UK. We've devised a short end of term activity revolving around a microbit investigation. We'd love you to deliver this and then capture the answers to four short questions from your pupils. There is a teacher survey too. Can be paper-based or online. For more information and to get a pack head over to this page: https://lnkd.in/dsu4wtVK If you can't squeeze it in before the end of term (or school is already closed for summer) , try the beginning of term! It's open until September 15th.

Following the great reception at the Computing At School conference of our Teacher Research projects booklet and their wonderful presentations, we are pleased to share the digital copy of the reports from these projects for you to download. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eySBuQ-E We are pleased to also announce that TICE3 will be run in conjunction with Computing At School. This will enable us to run two versions of this programme - one with F2F meetings and one completely online. We will be sharing the link for you to sign up for this early next week. Teacher research is a powerful way of investigating and improving both your own practice and the way your children learn. It's hard work, but very rewarding. We'd love to support you if you are interested in conducting your own teacher research project. Keep an eye on our website at https://lnkd.in/e48fhQkT and follow us here on LinkedIn!
