In doing so, we aim to have achieved an approach for REF 2029 that reflects a realistic and achievable policy for the sector and the funding bodies. Publishing it now gives a full calendar year before its implementation. We recognise the potential open access publication has to make research more efficient and impactful and I look forward to working with my team in Research England and colleagues in the funding bodies to develop policy for the next assessment exercise.” As we communicated in August, for REF 2029 there will continue to be an open access requirement for journal articles and conference proceedings. There is no open access requirement in REF 2029 for any other output types. Today we’re sharing the interim report from the evaluation we commissioned on the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF). Since its launch in 2012, UKRIF has driven investment in higher education facilities across the UK and encouraged partnerships, with 59 projects supported over seven funding rounds. We’re pleased that the findings show that the programme remains a robust and popular programme with higher education providers, addressing their critical infrastructure investment needs, fostering industry collaboration, and boosting private-sector investment in research. Steven Hill, Director of Research, Research England and Chair of the UKRPIF Programme Board said: “This interim report highlights the success of UKRPIF in driving investment into higher education research and underlines the important role of quality infrastructure in enabling research activity. We celebrated another key milestone in the implementation of the Independent Review of University Spin-outs at TenU’s event yesterday, where our Executive Chair Professor Dame Jessica Corner announced the publication of the latest iteration of higher education institutions that have adopted spin-out best practices, as outlined in the review. Adoption of best practice policies is one of the key recommendations of the review, and this latest iteration list includes institutions from across the UK for the first time. REF 2029 main panel and sub-panel recruitment to launch in December The REF panels play a crucial role in the REF, responsible for assessing the quality of research submissions. 📢 Spread the word! We will be seeking applications from individuals with a wide range of expertise and experience, including those from underrepresented groups, diverse research backgrounds and practices, or individuals outside of academia who engage with research. 🔓 We’re also moving to open applications, where anyone can submit their own application rather than being nominated by a sector body. By adopting this approach, we are aiming to enhance transparency, broaden the pool of potential applicants, and ensure that the panels reflect the diversity of expertise within each discipline. "In recent weeks we have continued to reach important milestones in the delivery of better spin-outs data, with HESA (part of Jisc) launching the Spin-out Census, which will ultimately provide the data for the first Spin-out Register. "The Register itself - and as a basis for data-linking to generate further new metrics - is vital to inform policy, practice and our funding, which we, with our national KE advisers at UCI, discuss in a new report published today."
