This winter, we are showcasing work from artist Huyen Phan, whose work has come through from Community Arts Project UK 🎨 ❄️ We partner with CAP UK to exhibit artworks created by residents inside prisons across the UK, as well as on release. CAP UK adopts a rehabilitative approach, using art to help prisoners with personal development, providing avenues for self-expression and stability. Huyen Phan is a Vietnamese artist who specialises in mixed media, textured art. Her work is characterised by its bold use of colours and textures, which she uses to convey complex emotions and struggles. Her journey started at HMP Send, where she first worked with CAP UK. Upon release, she has continued working with CAP UK to raise awareness of the importance of their art programmes within prisons, and in 2024, she won three awards from Koestler Arts including one platinum award for Portrait category. We're excited this festive season to feature her art on this greetings card and on Redemption Roasters seasonal festive blend, Santa's Yard. All profits from the sale of this card will go to Huyen. We've worked hard to ensure a link up between our in-custody training and providing opportunities upon release within our 13 shops in London☕️ We caught up with O, one of our employed Participants to hear about his journey from prison to working in one our shops. In October 2022, O completes our three week barista course in HMP Pentonville; mainly because he has heard you get to drink a lot of coffee! In February 2023, following a transfer to HMP High Down, O completes our barista and technician training, before becoming a mentor for subsequent courses, helping the trainers deliver their programmes. Following release and community training, he joins the Redemption Roasters team as an employee in March 2024. O is a great example of someone who has taken the opportunity presented to him and continues to go from strength to strength as he seeks a more positive future for himself. We’re delighted that one of Redemption's co-founders, Max Dubiel, has been recognised by Meaningful Business on the 2024 #MB100 ☕ Now in its sixth year, the award champions leaders combining profit and purpose to tackle complex social and environmental issues. Winners were selected by an expert panel of judges from over 850 nominations, representing 80+ countries. Redemption Roasters was recognised for its mission to 'reduce reoffending through coffee' and how we are scaling our impact, as we grow our coffee shops around London. With three new shops opening in the last two months, this has allowed us to provide more employment opportunities and deepen our impact. As of June 2024, over 20% of our current shop workforce consists of prison leavers and individuals at risk of offending, and we're very proud that we have had a 0% reoffending rate for the previous 12 months. The national reoffending rate (within 12 months of release) currently stands at 38%, making the positive impact of our work both inside and outside of prisons even more significant. Over 20% of our shop workforce consists of prison leavers and individuals at risk of offending. We are proud to announce that, as of June 2024, we have achieved a 0% reoffending rate over the past 12 months. Last week, Max, co-founder of Redemption Roasters, spoke with Lucy Burton, Employment Editor at The Telegraph, about the importance of providing employment opportunities to individuals upon release. Without access to training and employment, the likelihood of reoffending increases significantly. The national reoffending rate (within 12 months of release) currently stands at 38%, making the positive impact of our work both inside and outside of prisons even more significant. HMP The Mount unfortunately terminated its contract with Redemption Roasters without engaging in meaningful negotiations concerning a new one. This decision is inconsistent with the principles of the new Prisons Minister, James Timpson and his vision for a justice system rooted in rehabilitation and opportunity. We would like to thank Robert Wright for his piece in the Financial Times, which provides a balanced account of the situation. We decided to run the article to bring this matter to the attention of Ministry of Justice leadership, with whom we maintain a valued partnership. We are pleased to say, following the article, we are now talking directly to both Area Executive Director, David Hood and Mr. Timpson himself. If a new prison roastery site is not identified, all Redemption’s coffee production will move to commercial premises outside of prison by February 2025, where job opportunities will be available for prison leavers. Redemption’s prison and community barista academies will be unaffected by any roastery move. We remain strongly committed to employing prison leavers in the business, who currently make up 23% of our retail workforce, a figure we are deeply proud of.
