About us

Our aim is simple: we want to help people change their lives for the better – no matter what life throws at them. PSS in a nutshell: - We offer over 20 different services to help people get the most from their lives – from health and wellbeing through to social care services. We work with loads of different people from all different walks of life. Everyone’s different, and our focus is on helping people choose their own type of support. - Our world revolves around the people who use our services. They are the reason we do what we do and they play a huge part in helping us make decisions about how our services are run and making sure we’re doing things right. - We’re a business with a heart. All the money we make goes back into finding new ways to help people. - We go way back: we were founded in 1919 by Eleanor Rathbone, a lady famous for tackling social injustices. In 2019, we’ll be celebrating our 100th birthday - and we still look this great! We want to make sure we’re around for future generations, and we'll do everything we can do make sure that happens. - We’re always cooking up new ideas for services we can offer. We listen to what people tell us, and if we hear about a way we can help, we’ll create a service to do just that. - The PSS team is made up of our wonderful employees, dedicated self-employed carers, generous supporters (volunteers) and the next generation of brilliant professionals: our placement students. - PSS people are pretty special and everyone holds our five values at heart; we only recruit determined, open-minded, big-hearted, professional and genuine people. - We’ve got offices in Merseyside, Wales, Yorkshire, Manchester and the Midlands. • When you work at PSS, you’ll be someone who truly lives our values of being: Big hearted  Open minded  Genuine  Professional  Determined Our values are what connect us all and show us we’ve got the right people in the right roles. Just look at our incredible support workers, who recently supported people in our Making Days service to create their very own pantomime. Not only that, but they threw themselves into the fun and took on some roles too. Being an actor might not be in the job description, but they got stuck in nonetheless! A huge well done to everyone involved in the performance yesterday. It was funny, festive, and most importantly – FUN! We absolutely loved the show and especially enjoyed seeing how much joy it brought to everyone, teammates included!

There's a reason we've been around since 1919.   In fact, there's a few reasons any non-profit will stand the test of time. We know that, more than anything, it's our people and the passion, commitment and skills they bring with them - and that's not easy to find.   In this month's guest blog, Lisa Maynard-Atem goes behind the scenes to talk about what else goes on to keep us going beyond our good people: - good finance - good governance - good technology (used in the right way)   In today's world, it's harder than ever to be a non-profit but we plan on sticking around for many more years to come.   If you'd like to know more about our services or join our big hearted team of people check the link in the comments   #CharityLife #CharityGovernance #NonProfit #PublicServices THE BLACK UNITED REPRESENTATION NETWORK

Attending a PSS UK Finance and Performance meeting recently reminded me of just how much work goes into running a non-profit organisation. It’s something many of us don’t often think about—we make a donation, volunteer some time, or give our old clothes to charity, believing that’s all that’s needed. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, organisations like PSS are powered by a robust infrastructure that includes financial management, governance, compliance, human resources, and technological systems. These are not “nice-to-haves” but absolute essentials that keep the organisation running and its vital services reaching the people who need them most. I was struck by the parallels between non-profits and for-profit organisations—the strategic planning, resource allocation, and operational oversight are just as complex, if not more so. And when you add the responsibility of remaining transparent and mission-focused, it becomes clear that non-profits operate in an environment that requires immense dedication, skill, and innovation. This reflection inspired me to write my latest article, where I delve deeper into the unseen complexities of non-profits and why we should all recognise the incredible effort it takes to sustain them. It’s a reminder to look beyond the surface, appreciate the structures behind the services, and advocate for the continued support these organisations need to thrive. Let’s start a conversation: What are your thoughts on the operational side of non-profits? Have you ever stopped to consider what it takes to keep them running? Jacqui has been Sue’s Shared Lives carer for 15 years. In that time they've built up an incredible bond and Sue has overcome lots of challenges with Jacqui's support. This time last year, Julienne Elizabeth Meyer CBE, Chair of the Older People's Housing Taskforce, visited Jacqui and Sue's home to see how Shared Lives works in real life. She wanted to learn if it could help more older people live happy, independent, and hopeful lives. Spoiler alert: it absolutely can. Fast forward to now, and Shared Lives has been celebrated in the Older People's Housing Taskforce Report, Our Future Home: Housing that Promotes Wellbeing and Community for an Ageing Population. Jacqui and Sue’s story is featured in the report as a brilliant example of community-led care that really works. In the report it reads: Over the years, [Sue’s] life has seen remarkable improvement. Despite occasional bouts of low mood and ongoing health challenges, with the support of the Shared Lives carer and her family, [she] is able to manage these times well. Embracing her journey she finds solace and assistance from her Shared Lives carer. [Sue] has a great sense of humour and is continuing to live happily with the same family in her later life. ‘ Check the link in our comments to find out what the report had to say about Shared Lives, and other community-led forms of social care like it. • This week is Grief Awareness Week, and our Making Days team recently came together to support the people in their service for their annual Remember Me Day—a special day to talk about and remember loved ones who have died, in a safe and supportive space. It was also an opportunity to open up conversations about death and dying, something people with additional needs are often excluded from. During the session, everyone was supported to create their own personal books to think about their funeral wishes—things like, choosing flowers, music or whether they’d prefer to be buried or cremated. Some people had clear ideas, while others were just starting to explore their thoughts. We hope that by having these books it makes it easier to spark conversations at home between families, parents and carers about wishes and planning. Here’s an extract of a conversation we had with Jackie, about how she feels about planning a funeral for herself or family members. Conversations like these don’t have to be negative, it’s about giving people the safe space they need to talk about life’s most important and sometimes difficult topics. We’re really proud of the work our teammates across the organisation are doing to support the people in our services to have more choice in their life, from the little things to the really big things – it's all really important work. #MakingDays #RememberMeDay #TalkingAboutDeath #SafeSpaces #Support #AdultSupport #PSS #Grief
