About us
Polpeo simulates how a crisis breaks and spreads over digital and social media. Its simulation platform replicates the behaviour of media including social networks, microblogs, news sites, forums, blogs and video channels, while a live team behind the scenes mimics how the public might respond to the crisis. You can also send and receive simulated emails, collaborate on drafting strategies and communications plans and Q&As. Polpeo lets you experience the live drama and time pressures of a crisis, and rehearse and test your responses in a closed, safe environment. It is the closest thing possible to managing a real situation unfolding on social media. Simulations can be run for groups between 5 and 100 people. Polpeo is a joint venture company between social media agency The Social Element, and PR specialist Kate Hartley.

The 2015 TalkTalk data breach remains one of the UK's most high-profile cybersecurity failures. Teenage hackers found and exploited basic vulnerabilities in TalkTalk’s database, potentially exposing the data of four million TalkTalk customers. In the latest episode of What Just Happened? Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton sit down with crisis specialist Catherine Colloms to discuss how the breach exposed deeper, systemic failures in TalkTalk’s cybersecurity practices. The discussion includes: ⚠️ The importance of informed and confident leadership in managing a crisis ⚠️ The impact of a mismanaged crisis on the organisation’s reputation, customer retention and profitability. ⚠️The lessons other leaders can take away from TalkTalk’s crisis response. 🎧 You can listen to the full episode on the Polpeo site or your preferred podcast service https://lnkd.in/e6CWsPum #Cybersecurity #CrisisManagement #Leadership

Organisations that want to increase their chances of thwarting a crisis should focus on creating a culture of assertiveness. Does anyone on your team have permission to challenge you and their coworkers? Would you hear their concerns and reconsider your approach? In her latest post, Kate Hartley looks at the role assertive communication within a team can play in stopping a crisis in its tracks. https://lnkd.in/eDtQm7aF #CrisisCommunications #CrisisManagement #Assertiveness

The Wells Fargo cross-selling scandal is the topic of this week’s episode of What Just Happened? Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton talk through the crisis, which lasted over a decade and saw Wells Fargo placed under restrictions by the US government that were only lifted in February 2024. Jane Fordham joins the show to discuss how Wells Fargo responded and explore the wider issues around the culture that drove fraud on such a large scale. #CrisisManagement #CompanyCulture #Whistleblowing https://lnkd.in/epEqtHYq

It’s International Podcast Day and so the perfect excuse to have a browse through the What Just Happened? archives. As Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton prepare for the launch of the next series in October, let’s look back at some of the themes covered in the seven crises we looked at earlier this year. Leadership A fantastic ‘business-as-usual’ leader doesn’t always make good calls in a time of crisis. For every Tylenol CEO – making difficult choices that cost the business huge sums of money to ensure consumer safety – there are others who get things very, very wrong. We look at decision making, empathy and strong leadership in our episodes on United, Tylenol and BP. Conviction One big takeaway from the Bud Light crisis is the importance of being truly committed to the communities you’re working with. Dylan Mulvaney was left to face a storm of transphobic hate with no support from the brand that reached out to work with her. Partnering with influencers to reach marginalised communities will backfire if there’s a lack of genuine conviction behind the campaign. Misinformation The disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has never been resolved and accurate information is still scarce. In the aftermath of the disappearance, the airline had the impossible task of communicating with no information, in a media environment that was unremitting. We were lucky enough to speak to Rod Cartwright who was involved in the response. Action We discussed the backlash against brands that say one thing but do another. This was a big theme in our episode on the Nestle deforestation scandal. Accountability through the supply chain The horsemeat scandal taught us just how important it is to understand the risks in your supply chain, no matter how complex it is. You can find all of our past episodes on your streaming service of choice and on the Polpeo website https://lnkd.in/eurhmXaG #CrisisCommunications

Remember when Dr David Dao was forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight in 2017, injuring him in the process? The initial response from United was badly flawed, but the follow-up from then-CEO Oscar Munoz did a lot to repair the damage. In her latest post, Kate Hartley looks at the lessons leaders can learn from the scandal. #CrisisManagement #leadership https://lnkd.in/gcsRknZ8

How do you rehearse and prepare for a crisis? Kate Hartley takes a detailed look over on the CIPR Crisis Communications Network blog. Kate examines: 💡How to create and develop your crisis scenario – you’ll often know it’s a good one if makes you really uncomfortable and will put your existing plans through their paces. 💡Deciding who should participate in your simulation so that you include a range of voices and expertise. 💡How to lock in the lessons you take away from the experience. #CrisisTraining #CrisisComms #Risk https://lnkd.in/gP_Xqfgx

Weekend crisis listening if you can tear yourself away from Microsoft and Crowdstrike. Our guest on this week's 'What Just Happened' podcast from Polpeo was the amazing ✌️John Brown talking to Tamara Littleton and me about what happened when Greenpeace took on Nestle over palm oil and deforestation. I'm a massive fan of John's (almost to injunction point) and he approaches this in his usual no-bullshit style. It's occasionally sweary, so be warned if you don't like that sort of thing.

In this week’s episode of What Just Happened? Kate Hartley and Tamara Littleton discuss the Bud Light controversy of 2023. Bud Light sent Dylan Mulvaney, a trans rights activist and influencer, a personalised can of Bud to celebrate the one-year anniversary of her transition. But when Dylan posted a clip about it on social media, both she and the brand started to receive intense criticism from right-wing people, influencers, and the media. Bud Light responded with a statement that tried to please all sides of the debate, and later, Dylan took to social media to share her upset at the lack of support she received from the brand. Aby Hawker, founder and CEO of TransMission PR, joins Kate and Tamara to discuss what went wrong. #CrisisManagement
