About us
Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national charity that enhances the health and wellbeing of thousands of people in communities across the UK. We strive to ensure that everyone, no matter their circumstances, has access to the companionship of an animal. Our volunteers and their friendly pets visit establishments such as care homes, hospitals, hospices, schools and prisons, and bring smiles to many faces. People of all ages get the chance to chat to someone — and stroke and cuddle a dog or cat.

Fireworks bring cheer, but some pets live in fear!💛🐾 If you know your pet is scared of fireworks, make sure you take all the necessary steps for them to have a lovely and cheerful Christmas and New Year! Tip1: Walk your dog slightly earlier 🐕🦺🚶Try to take your dog outside while it’s still light, before any fireworks start. Feed your pet earlier too so the noise won’t distract it from its food. 😺If your cat is a wanderer and you are worried about them being outside when any fireworks start, encourage them indoors as early as you can. 🚰Anxious animals also tend to drink more, so make sure water bowls are kept topped up. Please help us share good tips with your friends💛🐾 #PetsAsTherapy #ChristmasFireworks #fireworks #fireworksseason #ChristmasCheer

It can be tempting to give your dog or cat some extra treats at Christmas time, but some festive food should be strictly off the menu. 🍰Mince pies and Christmas cake Raisins, currants, sultanas and grapes – traditional festive baking ingredients – are toxic to some dogs and cats and will make them very sick. 🍫Chocolate Chocolate contains theobromine, a poisonous substance that we can safely digest but even a small amount can be fatal for a pet. 🥜Nuts Bowls of nuts, especially macadamia nuts and walnuts, are also a danger to dogs and cats. Within 12 hours of eating macadamia nuts, your pet could start trembling and vomiting. 🧀Cheese It’s okay to use in moderation as a titbit, but don’t share the blue variety on your festive cheeseboard. Stilton and Roquefort contain a fungus substance that pets can be sensitive to. As well as causing an upset tummy, pets may develop muscle tremors and seizures. 🍷Alcohol There’ll be little festive cheer if your pet swallows alcohol, either in boozy puddings or from a glass on the floor. Alcohol can intoxicate and poison a dog or cat, making it drowsy and wobbly on its feet. In more severe cases, pets can suffer potential comas, kidney failure and even heart failure. #PetsAsTherapy #Christmas #FestiveFood #SafePets #ChristmasMeal #Dogs #Cats

Our Read2Dogs scheme can help young people to improve their literacy skills and encourage confidence and concentration in the classroom. Reading a story aloud to a PAT Dog, a great non-judgemental listener, helps young people to enjoy the reading experience. They look forward to spending time with their four-legged friend, which in turn creates a bond of trust, empathy and understanding of the needs of the pet. Pets As Therapy brings dogs in hundreds of schools every year. If you think there is a school near you that would benefit from having our PAT Dogs visit the pupils please send us a message or visit https://lnkd.in/ejjrxiUq #schools #edu #education #childrenmentalhealth #childrensliteracy
