And (most importantly 😝) we're proud to have her as a member of the OMG leadership team ❤️ Emzii is also looking for support so that she can undergo her gender reassignment surgeries. Even in the UK this is something with very limited NHS support - Emzii, and too many others, find their needs can only practicably be met through expensive private healthcare. We spoke to some of the TRANSforming Futures grantees about how people can step up to support the trans community. Co-led with Consortium of LGBT+ Voluntary and Community Organisations and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, the project empowered trans people and allies to create innovative, trans-led solutions to key challenges. 🖤 This is a day of tremendous grief. We have been commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance since 1999 when we united in grief to remember Rita Hester, a black trans woman who had been murdered. 🖤 Despite our best efforts, 25 years later, the violence not only continues but is actively encouraged by global anti-rights efforts that deny the very existence of trans people, fuel hatred and oppose the recognition of the basic human rights of trans people. 🖤 This year, the Trans Murder Monitoring Project by TGEU has recorded one of the highest numbers of murders (350) since the project records began in 2008, totalling more than 5,000 documented murders. 🖤 This is no doubt a consequence of the concerted efforts of anti-gender and anti-rights movements that instrumentalise and vilify trans people to push wider anti-democratic political agendas. 🖤 TGEU, GATE - Global Action for Trans Equality, ILGA World, APTN - Asia Pacific Transgender Network, IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and ESWA have developed a Joint Statement for Trans Day of Remembrance 2024. Today, November 20th, marks Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), a day dedicated to honouring and remembering transgender individuals who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. It serves as a solemn occasion to raise awareness about the challenges faced by transgender people, and to advocate for a more inclusive and accepting society. TGEU — Trans Europe and Central Asia has released its annual report, which shows that 350 trans people had been killed across the globe between 1 October 2023 and 30 September 2024, an increase on the 321 reported in the previous 12 months. This is also almost certainly an underestimate given the number of cases likely to be unreported or where the victim has been misgendered. These sobering figures show how much work there is still to do towards trans acceptance and how important it continues to be to push back against the negative portrayals of trans people in the media and beyond.
