The PowerShift Summit brought together some of the most important local and international voices in the energy sector, from public authorities to embassies, industry associations and private companies! These are the key highlights from the sessions I attended: Mr. Sebastian Burduja, the Minister of Energy, reiterated his commitment to making Romania an energy-independent country. He emphasized his vision for a local energy system focused on achieving the “3Ds”: Decarbonization, Decentralization, and, equally important, Digitalization. Ms. Kathleen Kavalec, US Ambassador in Romania and Ms. Anna Hällerman, Sweden Ambassador in Romania recognized the progress made by our country during last years and the strategic importance of Romania in the European Energy ecosystem. Mr. Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, mentioned that electricity covers only 20% of the total energy consumption. While everyone is talking about green energy and the transition process, he highlighted the need to address the inequalities in taxation between electricity and gas. He also reminded everyone in the room the importance of data security and ownership, critical for an energy ecosystem increasingly dependent on real-time data. Mr. Radu Caprau shared OMV Petrom goal to invest in a balanced and predictable mix of energy sources. He also announced 1,000 EV charging stations by the end of this year, with plans to multiply this number by 5 in the coming years. This represents a significant step toward expanding the mobility infrastructure in Romania. From a more holistic perspective, I was especially excited to hear insights from Alexandru-Valeriu Binig, my former EY colleague, currently Director of Regulatory and Antitrust at PPC Energy Services. He delivered a great overview of the challenges faced by distributors and suppliers and shared a his vision on how the local ecosystem must evolve to support prosumers’ growing role effectively. Mr. Eugen Butoarca, Chairman of the Board Distributie Oltenia, presented some interesting statistics, revealing that prosumers are heavily concentrated around few areas, while over 60% of transformation points have none or only one prosumer connected. Interestingly, most prosumers use only 30-40% of the energy they generate, with the rest being injected into the grid - passing the balancing challenges to the distributors and suppliers. While these insights reflect the technical and logistical challenges that come with integrating decentralized energy sources, he proposed multiple solutions to be considered in the future like dinamic pricing or proactive investments. Everyone agreed it is not an easy journey, but it is crucial to continue engaging all parties from the energy sector in constructive discussions, for advancing a long term national energy strategy, and coordinating infrastructure projects with digitalization and regulatory initiatives. #PowerShiftSummit #EnergyInnovation #ForecastingSolutions #SustainableMobility #OgreAI
