Our most downloaded publication of 2024 shines a light on a critical issue: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗮-𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮. 🌍 The report finds the whilst direct trade with Russia and Ukraine is limited, Africa's reliance on these nations for essential food and fertiliser imports has created significant vulnerabilities. This, coupled with the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, has exacerbated poverty and food insecurity across the continent, leaving millions struggling for basic necessities. The conflict's disruption of trade routes has also sent food and fuel prices soaring – with the latter doubling in some countries. We identified five policy priorities for African governments to navigate these challenges and build resilience: 🎯 Tailor short- and long-term policies in response to country-specific war impacts. 🛡 Strengthen social safety nets for those hit hardest. 💰 Implement proactive monetary policies to curb financial spillovers. 🧺 Boost local agricultural and fertiliser production. 🌍 Promote trade diversification for key imports. The international community also has a vital role to play in supporting regional resilience initiatives. The report was produced in collaboration with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) and the Economic Research Forum (ERF), and with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the so-called Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are exposed to the worst impacts of the climate crisis, despite bearing the least responsibility for it. At our event this month, new UK Special Representative on Climate Rachel Kyte highlighted the ongoing challenges SIDs and LDCs face in accessing much-needed concessional finance: "It's not just about the quantum; it's about the quality and accessibility of the finance." 💡 Whilst billions are mobilised for major infrastructure projects in larger nations, countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis are receiving the finance they so urgently need. Watch back the full conversation with Rachel, hosted by the Chair of our Board Suma Chakrabarti: https://lnkd.in/gjkemJM3 #ClimateFinance #SIDS #LDCs #ConcessionalFinance #COP29

2024 has been a year of big transitions. Rapid technological progress, shifting global power dynamics and ongoing crises are all reshaping an increasingly multipolar world, with new voices and perspectives emerging. 🌍 This brings with it many opportunities but also risks: fragmentation, rising inequality, and potential instability. So looking ahead to 2025, what can we expect? In our final Think Change podcast of the year, leading commentators Jeremy Bowen (journalist, BBC News), Bright Simons (President, mPedigree) and Linda Yueh (Fellow in Economics, University of Oxford) join our host and Chief Executive Sara Pantuliano to cast their predictions. "For most Syrians, the fall of Assad’s regime heralds a new era of hope and justice... At the same time, it has exposed a grim reality: the issue of forcibly disappeared persons continues to fester in the shadows..." As the dust settles on the collapse of the brutal 54-year Assad dictatorship, Leen Fouad from our Humanitarian Policy Group urges the international community to do much more to support Syrians in their search for over 100,000 people whose fates remain a mystery. Major humanitarian organisations are falling short in fulfilling their responsibilities. They must now take decisive action by supporting local networks and families on the frontlines of this struggle to find accountability and closure – which is critical for any chance of sustained peace. Anything less, as Leen writes, is "an abdication of moral responsibility." ⤵️ #Syria #SyriaCrisis #Assad

For International #MigrantsDay, we're highlighting the fundamental freedoms and rights of all migrants, including asylum seekers, internally displaced people and refugees. These three blogs explore how policy & practice can better support migrants' rights, across diverse contexts where they are under threat; featuring some exemplary initiatives. ❔ Ahead of the second Trump Presidency in the #US, what initiatives could support the potential increase in migrant returns to the Latin America and Caribbean region? Carmen Leon Himmelstine draws on new research with UNICEF Latin America and Caribbean. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ebWA-7uR ❔ Migration deterrence strategies are popular among politicians, but what do we know about their effectiveness? Caterina Mazzilli explores the flaws of this concerning policy trend. Read here: https://lnkd.in/efaUw4yw ❔ What does ‘home’ mean for people who are displaced? Reflections from the Humanitarian Policy Group's Caitlin Sturridge, with Paula Gaviria Betancur, Modjenpa Bibiche, Valeriia Vershynina and Alesia O'Connor, illustrate the need for aid actors to deepen the framing of home beyond a narrow focus on housing. On International Migrants Day, we are revisiting an insightful blog on the inclusion of migrant and displaced children in Latin America. Carmen Leon Himmelstine and Rachel Marcus highlight innovative approaches from the region that support children on the move – many of whom face perilous journeys, separation and rising xenophobia: 📚 Flexible education policies help children enrol in school despite documentation barriers. 🎶 Music and arts programmes, including mobile schools and orchestras, foster belonging and social cohesion. 🇲🇽 Alternative care models in Mexico provide unaccompanied children with safe foster care, offering community support and stability. 🏠 Independent living initiatives in Ecuador and Brazil equip adolescents with rent support, skills training and pathways to employment. But the challenges remain urgent. Migration across Latin America has reached record levels, with younger children increasingly at risk. Initiatives like these hold promise, but this blog reminds us that more evaluation is needed to understand their full impact and share lessons across the region and globally. #InternationalMigrantsDay #IMD2024 #MigrantsDay #ChildrenOnTheMove

Low-income countries face significant hurdles to building robust institutions. A shortage of economists often hinders their ability to formulate effective policies. Our Fellowship Scheme has matched more than 1,300 early-career economists with governments’ needs since it was established over 60 years ago. It's a win-win formula. Fellows work with host governments to transfer important skills and develop tailored solutions to respond to the countries’ needs. Fellowship alumni reach senior positions in government, international organisations, and the private sector. Find out more about the scheme: https://buff.ly/3DqP62w
