Guest speaker Barnaby Dobson Imperial College London will be presenting at the next webinar in the UK Freshwater Quality Programme series. The webinar titled - ‘Water Systems Integration Modelling Framework (WSIMOD): A physically-based simulation tool to inform future water planning at a systems level’ - will be at 11am on Tuesday 10 December. It is part of a series on a range of related topics organised by the Champions team water@leeds University of Leeds for the Programme funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council & Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Explaining more about his webinar, Dr Dobson said: "At the Water Systems Integration research group, Imperial College London, we have developed a framework, WSIMOD, that facilitates coupled simulations of the terrestrial water cycle. We have applied WSIMOD to a variety of multi-catchment case studies around England and Wales. "The physical approach that we take enables more transparent attribution of in-river pollution (e.g., farms or wastewater), more explicit representation of various water quality interventions (e.g., change in land use), and exploration of unintended consequences that arise through cross-system interactions (e.g., wastewater reuse reducing low flows downstream of the plant). "We believe that the result of this is a model that better enables placing in-river water quality central to decision making, and one that represents the interests of a multitude of stakeholders in the model." The aim of the webinars is to help promote communications and interactions between researchers, policy makers, businesses, voluntary organisations and practitioners who can all shape future UK freshwater quality.
