  • Every company has a Google Search Console setup, but those who have to work with more than a few profiles often struggle to monitor all of them. Google Search Console has a vast amount of data available, but it is not easily accessible or usable by teams. The API is not feature rich and there are no plans for Google to improve that. That's why 2 years ago, we created a Google Search Console extractor that downloads 26 different report types, Sitemap Indexing, Google Crawl Stats and User management of all profiles on a daily basis. Since then, we've been able to actively discover issues, as well as have push notifications of errors and warnings. We provide the data pipelines so that you can build Google Search Console data into your own business insights reporting. We can also provide the visualisation/reporting too. If you have to manage 10+ Google Search Console profiles across different brands/countries/domains/subdirectories, then we can help. Email [email protected] to schedule a call.

  • Last week Giacomo Zecchini was one of two community speakers to present at Google's Search Central Live 2024 in Zurich. The research topic of choice was Similarity. Similarity can mean different things to different teams: 1. Designer = Visual 2. Copywriter = Text The talk was focused on design. Normally with visual similarity it’s possible to compare two images side-by-side using pixel-by-pixel comparison, structural similarity index or feature based matching. This is computationally intensive and very costly. Instead, our research focused on using the layout tree information to convert HTML elements into simpler boxes where we could compare the coordinates and dimensions for similarity. This approach yielded a huge reduction in computation, cost and time. A link to the full presentation can be found in the comments.

  • 🔍 New SEO Research Alert: Canonical Link Tag Attributes Matter! Our team recently conducted an in-depth study on how Google interprets canonical link tags with additional attributes. Here's what we uncovered: 1) Certain attributes (hreflang, lang, media, type) cause Google to ignore canonical tags entirely. 2) We analyzed 595,517 domains and found 210 unique attributes in canonical tags. 3) Many popular SEO tools don't flag these problematic attributes. Key takeaway: Simplify your canonical link tags! Use only rel and href attributes to ensure search engines respect your canonicalization efforts. Want to dive deeper? Check out our full study with the link in the comments below and let us know your thoughts! #SEO #TechnicalSEO #WebDevelopment #SearchEngineOptimization

When I posted about joining Merj, I commented on the calibre of the team being one of the major draws for me coming on board. This research project is typical of the sort of thinking that goes on and the quality of the work the team delivers for our clients, and it's been very cool to watch the reaction to the piece ripple through the industry yesterday. 👇

📣 How Google handles JavaScript throughout the indexing process. We're excited to announce a new collaboration with Vercel! Together, we're conducting groundbreaking research into search engine JavaScript rendering capabilities, providing invaluable insights for SEOs, developers, CMOs, and CTOs. Part 1 of our study analysed Googlebot fetches, dispelling common myths and offering practical guidance for optimising web presence. It's packed full of insights. Here are just a sample: ✅ 50% of URLs without query strings are rendered within 10 seconds after crawling. ✅ 75% of URLs without query strings takes 22 seconds, while URLs with query strings takes 31 minutes. ✅ Google renders all 200 Status Code URLs. ✅ Google can discovery URLs within JavaScript and React Server Components ✅ Google differentiates between link discovery and link value assessment. ✅ Google's rendering process isn't strictly first-in-first-out. Factors like content freshness and update frequency influence prioritization more than JavaScript complexity. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will explore JavaScript rendering across other search engines and large language model scraping/integration from the likes of OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude). 🔗 Check out the full research article at the link in our comments. #SEO #JavaScript #NextJS #Google #Rendering #DigitalMarketing #Merj #Vercel
