As we near the end of the year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible milestones we’ve achieved together. Our latest blog highlights the power of partnerships during Scottish Careers Week, where schools, Skills Development Scotland, DYW Scotland, local employers, and MCR Pathways mentors worked hand-in-hand to create meaningful opportunities for young people. In our pre-budget statement published on the 3rd of December, we outlined our hope that the Scottish Government would fulfil its continued guarantee to young people, placing learners at the forefront of its aims. In order to do so, we asked for fairer funding for the voluntary and third sector that deliver vital services for young people across Scotland, including ourselves at MCR Pathways. In tandem, we also supported scrapping the council tax rate freeze to alleviate financial pressures on Local Authorities, who are our partners and corporate parents to many of the young people that we support on our programme. Finally, we hoped to see further investment in education & skills and social justice portfolios to eradicate child poverty and the attainment gap in Scotland. We're thrilled to see in The Scottish Government's progress report that we've played a key role in helping disadvantaged young people build their confidence, self-esteem, and attainment. Through our transformational, school-based mentoring programme, young people are not only improving their academic outcomes but are also gaining the confidence to take on future challenges. We look forward to continuing the programme and further enhancing it as we progress. With the continued support from the Scottish Government and the Hunter Foundation, we're excited to expand our reach and help even more young people across Scotland which is especially essential to delivering and keeping the Promise! Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eAxq-6bG As we grow, we're looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join us as volunteer mentors to help continue building on this success. A sense of perspective at work… As part of my role at AQA and included as part of the employee benefits on offer at AQA, earlier this year in April, I undertook a role as Student mentor with MCR Pathways and utilised the 5 days a year on offer to AQA employees to volunteer to undertake a 1 hour mentoring session each week during term time with a year 10 student in a local school. Since Covid, where I had some time to reflect on seeking out a career pivot more aligned to what matters to me, I had decided that I wanted to find a volunteering role that was directly linked to making a difference in young people’s lives. MCR Pathways mentoring programme aims to help realise young people’s full potential, no matter their circumstances, and I was thrilled to be accepted onto their programme and train up as student mentor and hopefully make a difference to a young person’s life in my local area. It’s been about 6 months since I began my weekly sessions and each week have been chipping away at building trust, engaging in conversation and building a rapport with my mentee. Football seemed to be a common ground to always start a conversation, and even with my limited if not non-existent knowledge of football, we have made great progress – in fact my mentee has actually been mentoring me on the finer details of premiership and non-league football! Today was a bit of a turning point. As a year 10 student, my mentee is about to head into a period of study leave and a series of subject tests and so I took the opportunity to dig a bit deeper into how they felt about the tests and preparations for their upcoming move into Year 11 and their GCSE exams. Although confident and keen to do well there was some indication around learning abilities and after sharing my own experiences of being diagnosed with dyslexia and how the assessment and subsequent tools and resources made available to me have helped massively, my mentee indicated that they would like to explore further how they might understand some of their own learning struggles and what might be available to them. This felt like the first real ‘mentoring’ breakthrough for me, as I was being trusted and asked to support and provide some guidance to help my mentee take the next steps that they need. Something that might not have happened if both of us hadn’t been part of the wondering mentoring programme that MCR Pathways provide. Making a difference in a young person’s life has always been my desired outcome from my change in career and this morning I saw that it’s not always the ‘big things’ that can make a difference, but also making time to enable an outcome by giving time to what I thought previously was the ‘small things’. I now understand what a difference that 1 hour a week can make to a young person’s life – even if it’s just being a constant, stable and safe moment in their week that they can rely on. It all matters and all makes a difference. #worklifebalance #aqa #volunteering #mentoring
