High stress environments can lead to prolonged undue stress on the body, which can impact not just your mental health, but also your physical health. Stress can build up and increase blood pressure, heart disease and increase your risk of stroke. When the body faces stress, it mounts a response releasing hormones to help manage the situation, known as the fight or flight response. It changes immune system responses and suppresses the cardiovascular system, digestive system, reproductive system and growth process. This complex natural alarm system also communicates with the brain regions that control mood, motivation and fear. The long-term activation of the stress response system and too much exposure to cortisol and other stress hormones can disrupt almost all the body’s processes. This puts you at higher risk of many health problems. Millions of people rely on caffeine every day for focus and energy. In fact, moderate coffee consumption can have various benefits in the workplace, such as increased productivity and alertness. However, it is important to be mindful of your caffeine intake, as overconsumption can lead to several side effects: 1. Increased anxiety: Higher doses of caffeine can trigger anxiety through increasing cortisol levels, the stress hormone. This can lead to jitters, nervousness and a rapid heart rate. 2. Disrupted sleep: Regular caffeine consumption in the afternoon and evening can disrupt sleep leading to a cycle of fatigue and a dependence on more caffeine. 3. Tolerance build-up: Over time the body will build a tolerance to caffeine and require greater consumption to achieve the same effect. 4. Interactions with medications: Negative interactions can occur when combining medications and supplements, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke or seizure. 5. Dehydration: Large amounts of coffee can promote dehydration over time. Up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day (about four cups of coffee) is considered safe for most healthy adults. If you want to reduce your caffeine intake, cutting back gradually can help to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Try swapping out caffeinated beverages for substitutes such as decaffeinated beverages or herbal teas. Our team of experts are on hand to support executives with their health so that they can feel and perform at their best.
