We are the national voice of local government
About us
The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national voice of local government. We work with councils to support, promote and improve local government. We are a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems. We are a membership organisation. Our core membership comprises 331 of the 333 councils in England and includes district, county, metropolitan and unitary authorities along with London boroughs and the City of London Corporation. The 22 Welsh unitary councils are in membership via the Welsh Local Government Association. We also operate an Associate scheme for organisations whose purpose and objectives are aligned with our own. Our Associates include fire and rescue authorities, police, fire and crime commissioners/police and crime commissioners, national park authorities and town and parish councils via the National Association of Local Councils (NALC)’s corporate associate membership.

✨Today is our Technology Innovation Showcase with PUBLIC! We'll be joined by councils, keynote speakers, and AI and smart technology vendors. 💡 Learn more about today's event in this post. 📝 Councils submitted challenges: In August 2024, we asked councils to submit challenge statements setting out the issues and problem areas which could be addressed by AI and smart tech solutions. 🏆 4 challenges were selected: In September and October, AI and smart technology providers submitted potential solutions to the 4 challenges. Vendors were selected based on the novelty and impact of their solution, their ability to scale in the local council sector, and their compliance with key data security and responsible deployment requirements of councils. The vendors presenting their solutions today are: ⭐ Challenge 1: Efficiency of the planning process - Verna, The Future Fox, Genie AI ⭐ Challenge 2: Improving local places - Alchera Technologies, Immense, Podaris ⭐ Challenge 3: Supporting social care practitioners - emma AI, Lilli, Starlight ⭐ Challenge 4: Digital front door - Futr AI, Mortar, Beebot AI 🎓 Shared learning from key speakers: Thank you to colleagues from the Ada Lovelace Institute, who'll share their latest research on empowering ethical and safe procurement of AI.
