The LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub is proud to support the second tender of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) initiative, set to launch in January 2025, aimed at aggregating demand for e-fuel-powered container shipping, which will be critical for the maritime industry to achieve its decarbonisation goals. One of the Decarbonisation Hub's core missions is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable maritime fuels. By supporting ZEMBA in enabling cargo owners to pay a premium for sustainable shipping services, we are achieving this and removing barriers to a cleaner future for the industry. The Decarbonisation Hub recently collaborated with ZEMBA for a Request For Information to assess the readiness of e-fuel production and e-fuels capable vessels. This effort has informed the design of the second tender calling for e-fuels for primary propulsion by participating shipping companies. TODAY: ZEMBA announced it will focus exclusively on catalyzing the first commercial deployment of e-fuels in the maritime sector through its next tender, set to launch in January 2025. It’s a historic moment for the global energy transition, as the maritime sector prepares to deploy what were until recently described by many as “future fuels.” ZEMBA member companies are demonstrating that the future has arrived. And just in time, as the need for private sector leadership and collaboration to solve problems comes into sharp relief, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors. Through this tender, ZEMBA will seek to help its members, which currently number 40 multinational companies, abate 470,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This would equate to 1.4 million twenty-foot containers transported across the Pacific Ocean by e-fuels, assuming a benchmark distance of Shanghai to Los Angeles. A new report produced by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF), in collaboration with the LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub and the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition, suggests that a comprehensive overhaul of seafarer training is required as the industry transitions to zero and near-zero GHG emission fuels. Made possible with the support of the International Maritime Organization and founding funder Lloyd's Register Foundation, the report marks the completion of the MJTTF training project for the development of a baseline training framework to equip seafarers with the skills required to safely use ammonia, methanol and hydrogen.
