Global CO2 emissions currently total around 38 gigatons annually, while only 40 million tons are captured each year. To meet climate goals, CO2 capture capacity must increase significantly - reaching 1 gigaton annually by 2030 and 6 gigatons by 2050 in a Net Zero Emissions scenario. This requires expanding CO2 capture facilities and developing extensive transportation infrastructure. As the next decade is crucial for advancing Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage technologies, our brand-new white paper identifies ten priorities to support the scale-up of CCUS and drive decarbonization across industries. Although CO2 utilization, such as in synthetic fuel production, shows promise, around 95% of captured CO2 will likely be stored in geological sites by 2050, with only 5% used for fuel production. A mix of policy, regulatory, financial and technological measures is key to accelerate the uptake of these technologies and create a sustainable market for CCUS. #GrowWithRINA

We announce the start of METACAST, a RFCS-funded dissemination project we coordinate to revolutionize numerical modelling for continuous casting in the European steel industry. It will build a common foundation for modelling by combining theoretical research from academia and practical know-how from the industry. We will tackle key casting challenges and maximize the potential of previous projects, by creating a universal modelling culture for the steel community. METACAST will deliver its impact through open-access training, dissemination events, and knowledge-sharing between industry experts, researchers, and students. This comprehensive view will help strengthen the exchange between all stakeholders, and foster sustainability and innovation across Europe’s steel sector. #GrowWithRINA

The Everywh2ere Hydrogen project we coordinated has been selected by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for the Best Success Story Award at the European Hydrogen Week 2024. In the context of the InfraROB project demonstration in collaboration with ASFINAG in Austria, we successfully validated an advanced pavement management system for road monitoring. Thanks to a Fiber Optic Sensors (FOSs)-based embedded system automatically installed during asphalt lay-down, real-time data on pavement conditions can now be collected. What sets this system apart? 🛣️ Real-time monitoring of crack patterns through strain and temperature variation detection 💻 Dynamic 3D digital twins that continuously update to reflect current road conditions 👷 Greater efficiency in predictive maintenance, leading to reduced costs and shorter intervention times We designed this cutting-edge system which empowers organizations managing road and highway networks to optimize infrastructure management intelligently and proactively. The construction of our hydrogen-fuelled Hydra pilot plant and our new hydrogen testing laboratories are progressing on schedule at our Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Castel Romano, Italy. Our project team recently welcomed our top management to the construction site and gave a tour of what has been done so far in Hydra. Our open innovation research project aims to reduce emissions to mere kilograms of CO2 per tonne of steel and will make its ground-breaking technology available to the industry on the way to net zero. The facility is set to feature a Direct Iron ore Reduction (DRI) tower and an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The DRI plant, based on the cutting-edge ENERGIRON® Direct Reduction technology developed by our partners Danieli Group and Tenova, together with the Tenova EAF will be able to melt up to 7 tonnes of green steel per hour. Our new hydrogen lab facilities will enable us to extend our testing capabilities to qualify materials, components and equipment for H2 applications, ensuring a comprehensive and validated shift to hydrogen-based processes. #GrowWithRINA
