On Thursday 5th December, we had the pleasure of welcoming talented Year 9 students from five local secondary schools to the SEGRO plc offices for the annual SEGRO plc School Challenge Grand Final: Baylis Court School Beechwood School BURNHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL Eden Girls’ School HERSCHEL GRAMMAR SCHOOL This Grand Final marked the culmination of an inspiring journey that began with in-school challenge days for the entire Year 9 cohort at each school. The winning teams from these sessions advanced to the final, where their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly. During the challenge, students were tasked with developing a business idea for a property on the Slough Trading Estate. For the final, they took things to the next level, designing a launch event for their business ideas. Guided by business mentors, the teams fine-tuned their concepts and delivered impressive presentations to our judges. Congratulations to HERSCHEL GRAMMAR SCHOOL, whose innovative app to promote their business idea earned them the top spot! Their creativity, collaboration, and strategic thinking were truly remarkable. A huge thank you to SEGRO plc for sponsoring this fantastic challenge, and to the business volunteers from Avison Young │ UK and Wates Group, who supported both the in-school events and the Grand Final. Your mentorship and encouragement made a real difference to these young minds. The students loved it too. "Thank you so much for this experience, this boosts my confidence and knowledge of the many varieties of jobs." This event not only highlights the potential of our future leaders but also underscores the importance of connecting businesses with local communities. Well done to all the students who participated—you’ve inspired us all! #CommunityInvestment #SloughTradingEstate #MakeaDifference

Thank you Jonathan Charmley for giving up your time, sharing your ideas and your expert knowledge!
Congratulations to University of Reading student, Jonathan Charmley, who joined Kate Winrow-Davies and the Learning to Work team and delivered a great careers’ session about Archaeology at Kendrick School this week. Jonathan was brilliant and inspired everyone he spoke to because of his passion for his chosen subject. To quote a member of the Learning to Work team: “Jonathan is quite simply an extraordinary young man” - he is also an extraordinary Ambassador for the University of Reading and Friends of Cookham Abbey. Keep up the fantastic work Jonathan. What a brilliant year you've had!

It's #Green #Careers #Week 2024 - an opportunity to raise aspiration, support diversity, challenge stereotypes, and promote real opportunities for young people to have a career that will genuinely make a difference. A green career can be any job, role or occupation that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment and our planet. It can be any industry, not just those seen as ‘green.’ Green skills are abilities, attributes, values, attitudes, knowledge, and technical skills needed to adapt services, processes and procedures to support climate change. Back in September, Learning to Work arranged for students from Baylis Court School to visit the IHG Hotels & Resorts Headquarters in Windsor. The office itself was incredibly impressive and gave the girls valuable insight into a busy and professional office environment. The day was kicked off by Rachel Davis and Rohan Wedge, who introduced the students to some amazing hotel statistics and fascinating facts about how IHG operates globally. The students were engaged and fascinated by the #hospitalityindustry, sparking many questions about how to pursue a #career in the field. The students also had the opportunity to hear from four amazing IHG employees with incredible backgrounds. They shared valuable advice on applying for #apprenticeships, #university applications, and highlighted the importance of knowing that it's okay to change paths if something doesn't suit you. The students participated in a lively Q&A session, and it was fantastic to see how these professionals were able to share their insights and inspire the next generation. The team at IHG shared with the students about a tool they use within the organisation called IHG Skills Builder, and they can log on to access #free hospitality and employability skills training. To finish the day, the students engaged in a great interactive activity focused on #customerservice and the importance of going above and beyond in the industry. They created teddy bear towels and were challenged to design the best one. The students embraced the #challenge, diligently following the instructions and even adding their own accessories to personalise their teddy bears! Thank you to Chris Pidgeon for judging and gifting the winning team with IHG goodie bags! #workplacevisits #businessinsight #inspiringthefuturegeneration
