The role of universities today was very much the underlying the discussions at the Universities UK research and innovation conference Setting the scene for the day was the helpful perspective of government seeing Universities as key centres of R&I, and being critical for local growth. Which aligns with HMG’s focus on how R,D and I can transform the lives of UK citizens through their missions. Alongside this was a clear understanding of the need to maintain curiosity driven research which has helped establish our world leading HE sector Other discussions followed concerning the need to assure research’s excellence and reduce bureaucracy. But a large part to the discussion were two panels on the role of universities and knowledge exchange in enabling growth in different places across the UK. The panel I was on showcased the different approaches in different places…. Though the ingredients were the same - quality research and teaching, - innovation hungry businesses, - enabling local authorities, - and a talent pool able to respond to the opportunities The recipe very much varies according to the local structure and the needs and opportunities in the place. And the key regardless of place is bringing together people and perspectives with a focus on innovation - something Universities are well placed to do and are actively playing their part The day also underlined the need for sharing of experience and best practice between institutions and places. As well as the skills to support knowledge exchange through strategic partnerships, commercialisation, and collaboration building … so lots that Knowledge Exchange UK (PraxisAuril) can contribute to
