Leading tech charity working globally to eliminate child sexual abuse images & videos from the internet.
About us
Protecting children is at the heart of everything we do. For over 25 years, since the early days of the internet, our job has been to help child victims of sexual abuse by hunting down and removing any online record of the abuse. How we do this Tech-for-good.We build cutting-edge tech tools designed to make it easier to identify and remove online images and videos of child sexual abuse. In short, tech to protect kids. Our team of human analysts. Tech companies and law enforcement worldwide trust the assessments, experience and knowledge of our extraordinary team of people. Working together. With international partners in government, law enforcement, reporting hotlines, charities and the tech community we work to stop illegal images of children being circulated again and again. We share vital information that could lead to the rescue of a child from terrible abuse. IWF Hotline. This gives people a safe and anonymous place to report suspected online images and videos. When we started in 1996, 18 per cent of child sexual abuse imagery online was hosted in the UK. Today, thanks to our Hotline, it’s less than one per cent. We’re proud of that.

Our Interim CEO Derek Ray-Hill, said: ""Every image or video of child sexual abuse is a crime scene. "The children are real, and the abuse inflicted on them can affect them for life. "Every day at the IWF, we see the results of his kind of offending. That predators like Edwards can now reach children through their phones, when they should be safe in their own homes, is a public health scandal which must be taken seriously."

"I don't think Telegram or any platform can, or should, hide behind the claim of privacy to allow illegal activity, particularly the sexual abuse of children. It's just not acceptable" - our CTO Dan S. told BBC Panorama.

We welcome Ofcom duties, but new online safety guidelines need to be more ambitious if the “hopes of a safer internet” are to be realised. Our Interim CEO Derek Ray-Hill, said: “A safe internet should mean there is nowhere for criminals to get away with sharing imagery of children being raped, tortured, and sexually abused. While laying some strong foundations, these regulations fall short of that ambition. “The Huw Edwards scandal highlighted how criminals are sharing images and videos of children being abused in private communications. But these regulations would do nothing to detect and prevent crimes like this in these spaces. “Mandating the use of hash matching to detect child sexual abuse is a positive step, and something the IWF stands ready to help platforms with. But unless we can see similar measures brought to private communications, these guidelines create a risk of platforms designing themselves out of scope of the regulations. “There are already effective ways to prevent child sexual abuse material being uploaded and shared in these spaces. We'd like to see a more ambitious approach with these tools being widely deployed. “Last year, the IWF discovered 275,652 webpages containing child sexual abuse, more than ever before in its history. This year is set to surpass even this grim milestone. We have also seen younger and younger children being targeted and groomed online in their own homes. Children as young as three. There is still a lot of work left to be done if we are to realise these hopes.” https://lnkd.in/daYCnknk
