As an employer of workers throughout the UK and the US, across temporary roles, we couldn’t let Anti-Slavery Day go by without passing comment. It forms part of Anti-Slavery Week (14th - 20th October), offering the chance to reflect on any progress made and the challenges which remain, to raise awareness, and to strengthen the call for change – to bring an end to this worldwide affliction. Why is it important to highlight this issue? Because, as of today, over 50 million people around the world – greater than the population of Spain, Argentina, or Canada – are trapped in conditions of modern-day slavery. Of those, 28 million are in forced labour, with 24 million being exploited in the private sector. These figures include 122,000 people in the UK alone. What exactly is modern-day slavery? There are many definitions of modern-day slavery, but in relation to the world of employment, it covers… - Human trafficking: where someone is moved from where they live, by force, coercion, or deception, and made to work for little or no pay. - Forced labour: where individuals are made to work, against their will, under threat of punishment or penalties (this can be a particular issue in construction, manufacturing, and domestic work). - Bonded labour/debt bondage: when someone is forced to work to pay off a debt or loan – tricked into working for little or no money, with the debt usually being impossible to pay. So what is Indeed Flex doing to help combat this? - We’re members of Unseen UK - the UK's modern-day slavery helpline. We display the helpline number on our app for workers to report any concerns, 24/7. - We’re also members of Stronger Together, the Responsible Recruitment Toolkit (RRT), and the Association of Labour Providers (ALP) - We have a team of 17 trained UK Anti-Slavery Champions within the company, who play a pivotal role in furthering our commitment towards abolishing modern-day slavery within our business and supply chain. They expand awareness campaigns and ensure we remain fully compliant with the UK Modern Slavery Act. - In addition to this, we’re rolling out modern-day slavery training to all UK employees to raise awareness of the issue and so they know how to spot the signs.
